Terrifying, stark and unforgiving. The images drawn by McCarthy's words are haunting, ominous, and precise. Even in times of plenty, people do evil things; when nothing remains to nourish either body or soul, all action, all thought, is deformed and unrecognizable. "In stories we're always helping people and we dont help people" the boy matter-of-factly tells his father. "Those stories are not true." And yet, the boy can still feel what right and goodness are, even though his world, his "real life", has never witnessed it. How can this be? Goodness, helping others, trust--fragile concepts all. It's not a stretch to take the actions of these people in extreme circumstances and compare them to our own inablility in so many ways to do the right thing, the "humane" thing. To leave ourselves open, to think of something beyond just ourselves and our own interests. To work together. It's not a new idea. But the lens McCarthy focuses on it has a singular and penetrating depth and life.

There are some flaws in O'Brien's first book, but they are far, far outweighed by the good. Well-rounded main characters, interesting supporting characters, a unique concept and complicated questions about the nature of parentage and adoption. All is founded on a hard science base, and the anthropology is mostly believable, as well. All in all, a great read.
