I found this book to be a good reminder for women to actually listen to themselves and follow their gut instincts. The author is right on that women so often don't want to come across as "rude" and therefore can allow themselves to engage with people who make them uncomfortable. It was also good validation for women to not allow the men in their lives to make them feel like they "shouldn't" be afraid in certain situations (b/c men simply can't understand what it's like). Overall, an interesting read (although some chapters I could have done without and/or skipped over b/c I felt like some things got redundant).

I am sorry to say that I went un-vegan while reading this book. Not because of the book but, due to certain events, I have accepted dairy. In a way I'm kind of sad because, being vegan, you really DO feel like a freak. A freak without a ship to sail on. That is until you meet Bob and Jenna Torres, your new captains. They will guide you through some pretty solid information about veganism and animal rights and, although I no longer ride with their beliefs, I definitely recommend this for anyone on the fence. Or even for vegetarians and omnis just to get a look at the bigger picture of where your food (and clothing and cosmetics and furnisings and etc) comes from. Outstanding work.

This was excellent, it follows New Orleans residents from all over the city from the time of Hurricane Betsy through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Each gives their own fascinating insight into what it means to be a resident of New Orleans. You become so emotionally invested in these people- by the end of the book, I was sobbing.

I wanted to like this more than I did. After making it through half the stories, I found a number of that characters sticking with me even though I wanted to part company. In that I think Eggers is a great writer, one who captures a particular wedge of our humanity that we usually, maybe for good reason, gloss over.
