I LOVED this book. It's been a long time since I have enjoyed such a refreshing heroine. Charley Davidson, is unique, but relatable, and truly hilarious. As a Grim Reaper, Charley's normal day consists of talking to ghosts and investigating crimes as a Private Investigator. It does little for her social life or personal life, when she is frequently found conversing to empty spaces where recently dead people reside. And the more we get to know Charley, the more we understand that this is just the tip of the iceberg for the amount of strangeness in her life. So, Charley ends up facing a case where 3 lawyers of the same firm are murdered. With the help of her Cop Uncle and her ghostly friends, she finds ways to bring justice to these deaths and catch the bad guys. In the meantime, she has nightly visits from a mysteriously sexy apparition, Reyes. I adored Charley. She's down to Earth, but has a snarky bite and loads of interesting things happening to her. I loved the fact that she jumps into things without fully weighing out the possible harm to herself, but lucky for her, she heals fast. Reyes, her mysterious man, is... sorta there. But I'm anticipating more from this particular mass of handsome man goodness in later books. He's just there to either save her life and boink her silly, so it's really hard to think of him as a fulltime love interest. Overall, an interesting read. I think a lot of people will enjoy this. It's different than anything I have come across in UF. and I mean, different in a good way.

I heard a lot of buzz about this book, and while it does have some interest as the sole African-inspired member of the Percy Jackson/Harry Potter "magical kid" genre, I just couldn't get into it. Even after reading the entire book, I never got a sense of who the characters were as people, so their problems didn't engage me. Also, the dramatic final confrontation lacks, well, drama. It seems to come too fast and be over to easily. For other fantasy/sci-fi inspired by African myth, check out: The Eye, The Ear and The Arm (for younger kids, but still awesome) Act of Grace (for adults)

This goes on my list of good books that take place in New York City. They have to meet the following requirements: 1) A believable city: historically accurate and without anachronisms. 2) Not a trite city: a depiction of a skyscraper, a brownstone, a tenement, Coney Island and the subway is not enough. 3) Worth reading: if the plot or the information provide is not interesting and complex, it's useless and doesn't go on the list.
