It was interesting to thumb through this cookbook on the heels of 97 Orchard : An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement, because much of the information in the chapter on Jewish Immigrants was mirrored in the textual parts of this cookbook. Schmaltz is praised and utilized like crazy; that just made me think I needed to pay more attention when I eat Jewish food (I don't eat chicken!) The recipes come from the Ashkenazi tradition more or less, but it feels like Polish grandmother food. Same difference, maybe. Hearty, full of fat, and full of tradition. I bookmarked quite a few recipes to try: -Split Pea Soup (versions for dairy and meat, I'd make dairy) -Anne Whiteman's Birthday Kugel (picture is of my attempt!) -My Family's Yom Kippur Break Fast Kugel (clearly I'm enamored with sweet pasta casseroles!) -Chocolate Babka -Junior's Cheesecake -Rugelach There was also a little blip about egg creams, which I couldn't resist making. It didn't turn out as described, and I'm pretty sure I'd need freshly bubbling seltzer for it to really work.

Dear Sophie McGee, Something tells me we would have gotten along famously in high school. Love, Me Snarky, dry humor, teensy-bit off-kilter ... I loved this book. Sophie McGee is a hysterical narrator, and Robinson's tight writing (and killer sense of humour) had me laughing EVERY OVER SENTENCE. I am anxiously awaiting whatever next Robinson will write. I'm making my supervisor read this book tomorrow --- I honestly can say that I will happily promote this book to both the Twilight and anti-Twilight crowds!

This is one of those books that proves the old adage "truth is stranger than fiction". Augusten Burroughs has lived a life that at times is so absurd and unbelievable you know it can't possibly be fictionalized. He is able to narrate his own painful childhood with a sharp sense of humor and without an excess of self-pity. I was totally engrossed and in awe that there are people whose lives really are this bizarre.

I started this book on 04/18/2009. I finished this book on 04/25/2009. This is the kind of Nora Roberts book that I like. I don't mind a little romance in a book but I want there to be a story line other then the romance. This book had me from the start and I can't wait to read the second and third books in the series. The theme of the books kind of reminds me of her other books Born In Series. But I really liked Cal and Quinn and all the characters. A wonderful and quick read. I would have gave it 3 and a half stars if the half stars were allowed.
