Such a beautifully written book, writing so beautifully about the most horific acts of violoence ... the Soviets invade Afghanistan,the US supports the Afghanis in fighting the Soviets ... the war, and Pakistan, opens the door for radical Islamic factions (including the Taliban) who fight each other for political dominance ... Al Queda and Bin Laden are most likely the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks, the US goes back to Afghanistan to wage war ... and the country is carpeted with landmines, and it is basically chaos,deadly, cruel testosterone fueled chaos - none of the countries involved have taken the high road. And the women and the chldren simply cannot win ... I think that this might be my vote for the Impac nomination.

Benson and I just finished listening to this book on CD. The only problem with these animal books (where they talk and have feelings) is that you feel like becoming a vegetarian afterwards. And you start to think cobwebs are beautiful. I really love this book, and I think Benson kind of liked it too. (Although I'm sure he'd get more out of it if I waited another year or two.)

Percy Jackson has jumped around from school to school. He just doesn't fit in and his mother married a really bad step-father after Percy's father left. Percy has never been quite like anybody else, but as the end of sixth grade approaches he finds out he's only half human. This book is geared toward middle school males, like Harry Potter. I really liked the Greek mythology that was entwined naturally into the characters of the book. I was mesmerized from the first page and can't wait to read the others in the series.
