For first time readers to this topic, this is a great book to start out with. Filled with great photographs, it's easy to read and really well done. You get to know the people behind the planning and the people who suffered during the attack. For resource material, this is a great book. A great addition to anyone's collection.

This book is so hard for me to rate. I was obsessed with it as I was reading it. I love the premise of the book - memory of past lives and a yearning for love through the ages. And it was well done. It manages to skip across centuries, change the current names of characters and not leave you confused about who is who and what is going on. But. The end. Dear god, the end. It's not done. I have questions. Many. I'm left hoping desperately that Ann Brashares finishes this story at some point in the future and answers all of them.

It's 1907, and sixteen-year-old Julia Hamilton lives an uneventful life in London, though she dreams of seeing distant places and having exciting adventures. Her mother died of an illness when Julia was very young and her father is often traveling in his work for the British Foreign Office. When she learns her father is to take a trip to the Middle East, she begs to come along, and to her delight, her father agrees. On the journey, Julia befriends Graham Geddes, a handsome young student from Oxford whom she learns is to be part of their tour group. Graham shows her the sights of the exotic city of Beirut - and also awakens her to the political unrest in the region. Graham is sympathetic to the Young Turks, who wish to reform the Ottoman Empire, a position Julia's father strongly disagrees with. Julia is attracted to Graham but feels torn between him and her father. Their fellow travelers, and even their tour guide, seem to have hidden motives as well. Parade of Shadows was another excellent historical novel with a unique setting by Gloria Whelan. Julia was a wonderful character - she starts out as a sheltered young girl, but during her journey she matures and becomes more aware of the world around her. In light of the current situation in the Middle East, it seemed particularly relevant to read about the political unrest that existed there a hundred years ago. I'd highly recommend this book to young adult readers who enjoyed the author's previous novels or who enjoy historical fiction

Some people love this shit and find it oh so witty and creative, but to me the perfect phrase to describe this book (and all Tom Robbins) is "verbal masturbation." If you value the simple beauty of good prose, you will feel dirty after ol Robbins spews gratuitous, barely cogent metaphors willy-nilly all over your literary face line after nauseating line. Robbins is clearly getting off on his own cleverness; it's just too bad he didn't stop to think about your needs.

This book borders the line between eery and funny; everything is so perfectly broken down, and wonderful.

It's Shakespeare, what more needs to be said.

Although I enjoyed the writing, I found the book a bit disappointing and not believable.

Almost 5 stars. Martin, the editor, outlined the universe, very similar to ours except for the (view spoiler). Then he turned some of the best SF/Fantasy writers loose. Wow. History is rewritten in some interesting ways, but filled with familiar figures. Imagine Kennedy, McCarthy, Nixon, Humphrey & all dealing with the wild cards. Comic, tragic, vile & heroic, but all larger than life, these characters bring to life so many of the attitudes & issues we really did face from post WWII through the 70's, but in ways only masters of the genre could tell us. Note: Originally, the book blurb here on GR had a final paragraph that read... Now, thirty years later, the victims face a new nightmare. From the far reaches of space comes The Swarm, a deadly menace that could very well destroy the planet. Putting aside their hatred and mistrust, Aces and Jokers must form an uneasy alliance and prepare for a battle they must not lose.... This is incorrect. I have removed it from the book description. If it comes back due to a sync with Amazon or whatever, just ignore it.

Declan's (age5) top book of 2010. His favorite part: the end papers that show blueprints for more robots.

Incredible insights regarding the story of slavery, emancipation, and urban life for African Americans in early Philadelphia. First such sociological study in history. Also contains interesting biographical facts regarding W.E.B. DuBois, especially those associated with his employment with the University of Pennsylvania.
