This is an amazing book. It's about an issue that I really knew nothing about: In the dozens of wars being waged around the world, hundreds of thousands of children are being forced to become soldiers, forced to carry and use guns bigger than they are. These children have lost their families and homes, and then lose their innocence. The armies keep the kids hopped up on drugs and feed their need for revenge so that when the time comes, the kids are able to commit unspeakable acts of violence without batting an eye. This book is so moving because it is told by someone who went through this as a child. It is heartbreaking and infuriating and ultimately uplifting. It's a must-read.

The Naming is a very descriptive fantasy - a traditional story of good and evil. It tells the story of Maerad, a reluctant heroine who embarks on a remarkable journey of discovering her true identity and calling. The author is admittedly influenced by the writings of Tolkien, and it shows, but the story still has an element of originality and contains many great merits of its own. I found myself taking notes of lines that struck me as timeless truths: (Don't fear your enemies, pg 55) "They want our wills to weaken in fear. They feed on our fear. Starve them!" (Every person has value, pg 97) "You are in another world now, where it is considered that every human being is worth the trouble of being cared for." (and pg 104) "The law is that the hungry must be fed, and the homeless must be housed, and the sick must be healed. That is the way of the Light." (Learning to live loved, pg 318) "One difference is that for the Dark, certainly, you are a pawn. For the Light, you are a free human being... free to choose. It is the difference between commitment and slavery... between working for what you hope for and believe in the depths of your heart, and what someone else forces you to do." I look forward to reading the other 3 books in the series. The characters were easy to care for and the plot was not predictable. Adolescents and adults who are drawn to fantasy even a little bit, will enjoy The Naming.

A moving account of various aspects of losing one's normal vision and other senses. Oliver Sacks' own experience -- his lack of ability to recognize faces and his near blindness -- is one of the most personal accounts. I am also relieved to know that many people have limited "visual imagery" while they have perfect "visual perception". I can not imagine a single line when I close my eyes. It has troubled me since I discovered that others can, and can manipulate fully imaged objects dynamically. I wonder if I am deprived of a particular experience, and thus the knowledge from such experience. I have wondered if I am among the very few. In this book, Sacks indicated that he himself has no "visual imagery" either. Many researchers have tried to connect the "thinking in pictures" versus the kind that relies largely on abstraction (such as language) to how we think, and how we experience the world. To me, the sensory world is a wonder. But we rarely appreciate it fully because what we are given seems to be perfectly entitled. Sacks constantly remind us that it is not so; in the full spectrum of sensory experience, we can also learn to be grateful and be truly aware.

Dari sini muncul peraturan yang sangat menguntungkan bagi para ibu hamil yang melahirkan di Jepang, karena pemerintah Jepang menyediakan subsidi yang cukup besar bagi mereka. Selain itu ketatnya persaingan membuat tingkat bunuh diri semakin tinggi. Sangat menarik bukan mengenal negeri Jepang dengan segala kehidupan, tradisi, semangat, etos kerja, kemasyarakatan, perayaan, bahkan keanehannya. Buku berjudul Panduan Sukses Orang Indonesia di Jepang mengenalkan pembaca pada seluk beluk negara Jepang yang sangat menarik, plus kepositifan karakter mereka. Bagi yang ingin ke Jepang? Peluang sangat terbuka, apalagi Jepang termasuk salah satu negara yang memberi berlimpah beasiswa. Mengingat kuantitas SDM mereka yang mulai menurun, mereka mulai membuka diri dengan kedatangan orang-orang asing ke negara mereka. Nah, buku ini sangat bisa dijadikan pegangan dari mulai mengurus paspor, visa, dan apa yang harus dilakukan ketika telah sampai di Jepang. Penulis cukup detail dalam merinci segala persiapan keberangkatan dari mulai mengurus paspor dan visa, hingga mempersiapkan diri hidup di Jepang. Hanya saja, format penyampaiannya terasa sedikit membosankan bagi pembaca yang hanya ingin mengenal Jepang karena terlalu formal dan tektual. Mungkin akan lebih menarik jika poin tersebut disampaikan dengan tampilan layout yang lebih menarik. Pembaca yang berminat ke Jepang layak untuk mencari buku ini, karena selain isi lengkap juga terdapat peta rute transportasi yang akan sangat membantu bagi siapa pun yang ingin menjelajah negeri Sakura. ** spoiler alert ** An interesting novel about the rivalry between the two Queens for the throne. Elizabeth, the daughter of King Henry VIII, and Mary Stuart, the great-grandniece to King Henry VIII, were true royal blood. Mary fled the rebels in Scotland and came to England under Elizabeth's promise of sanctuary. Her sanctuary, however, turned out to be an indirect imprisonment. The constant surveillance, her longing for power, and her own ambition enticed her to claim the throne. Hence started this epic battle. Gregory did an amazing job in building climaxes. In the beginning, although both Queens had their peripheral dislikes and nuisances to each other, they were still civil to one another. Both believed it's an blasphemous act to annihilate the other royal blood, so they simply aimed to disinherit and banish the other one from the Elizabethan court. In the end, after years of treacherous plotting and devious schemes, they were hell-bent to kill and behead the other Queen. Besides the delicious strategic ploys between the Queens, Gregory also whipped up two memorable side dishes. George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, was the maverick of this novel. He served Queen Elizabeth of England, yet he was fatally attracted to Mary Queen of Scots. On top of that, he was married to Bess of Hardwick. Emotional turmoil at the finest! Bess of Hardwick, the indomitable wife of George Talbot, was a pioneer in the old world. A woman with low social hierarchial status who married 4 times and raised to be a landlord was unprecedented in 19th century England. A heroine who defied all odds. Truly amazing! I love the demure strategic planning of the plots and the encompassing emotional range from the characters. Treason, mayhem, lust, betrayal, love, and hatred. What's not to love? ;)
