Not as lovely and romantic and engaging as Goose Girl, but a quick pleasant little read nonetheless. I like how Shannon Hale creates worlds based on real cultures, and I enjoyed the Scandinavian feel of this one.

...The Frozen Sky is a well written novella, looking for a reader not afraid of a generous helping of hard science fiction. As with many shorter pieces, some readers will feel it should have been longer and that is leaves a lot of the background of the story rather vague. Personally, I feel Carlson gets the level of detail right. It is after all, as much a story of Vonnie and how, despite the hostility she meets on Europa, she's still able to defeat the impulse to blindly strike back and realize what must be done instead. When Vonnie reaches that point, the background, fascinating as it may be, has served its purpose. To me at least,The Frozen Sky is a very satisfying first contact story. Recommended for hard science fiction fans in particular. Full Random Comments review

After reading Herge’s best Tintin album, Tintin in Tibet, The Castafiore Emerald feels like a letdown. It still has Herge’s signature clear line, and it does have complicated plot, setting it in Marlinspike for the entire story feels pedestrian. I prefer my Tintin globetrotting. But this would have worked better have a read it as part of the 3 album volumes I was buying before reading my first oversized album.

A rather mediocre writing style diminishes the appeal of the book. Also, the author gives no source notes which I at least would have found helpful. He does have a selected bibliography at the end but there's no telling what his sources are for some of the stories he quotes. Not recommended.
