This book is difficult to read just because the style that it is written in is like the stream of consciousness. But I also liked the style because you are able to see everything the character thinks, feels, etc. about themselves and others. It showed me how much people (as in myself) judge others subconsciously. It helped me to understand people better, but it was just very slow and uneventful (that was the authors purpose, I think, to focus completely on the characters and not on a plot.)

I might like this even better than The Goose Girl. Enna as protagonist is energetic and confused, both of which make it compelling. I've been very big on books with strong friendships lately--or maybe always and I've just become conscious of it--and the best part of Enna Burning is the amazing connection that Enna and Isi have. On top of that, though, too, is the bigger group friendship between Enna, Isi, Finn, and Razo. It's interesting that Geric isn't quite included in that, having never been one of the animal keepers like the others. And I adore Finn. The scene in which he says "All I've ever wanted is to be near you," when he thinks Enna is sleeping melts my sappy little heart.

When I read a review of the movie made from this book, I thought it was one I might want to see sometime. Last spring when my exchange student, Tolkounai, wanted to rent a movie to watch, and urged me to pick out one, too, I chose Slumdog Millionaire. Tolkounai started watching it with me, but lost interest, and since I was having difficulty following the plot line while talking to her, I didn't finish it. Then this summer, I was discussing audio books with a friend, and she really encouraged me to listen to Slumdog Millionaire because she thought the reader did an outstanding job and she loved the story. She was sure that if I listened to it, the plot would be clear. She was correct. The story is about Jamal Malik, an 18 year old orphan from the slumbs of Mumbai. The story opens with Jamal participating in a quiz show, India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, in which he has successfully worked himself up to the last question. The owners of the show cannot believe than an unschooled slum child could possibly know the answers and have him arrested where he is tortured to find out how he has done it. Suddenly, from nowhere, a young woman appears claiming to be his lawyer, and when she is able to remove him from the torture area and gain access to a private space, tells him that if he was not cheating, and can explain to her how he was able to do it, she will be able to help him. So....he tells his story, flashing back to events in his life which amazingly happen to mesh with the questions. The events are taken in the order of the questions rather than than in the sequence of his life (part of my confusion as I watched the movie.) Sharp, with a photographical mind, a memory for details, and and uncanny ability to get himself in an out of a broad number of situations, Jamal does know the answers to the questions.. As the stories unfold, readers also learn that even though he could not have expected that he would be able to answer the quiz questions, and, indeed he did not know the answers to many common knowledge questions, we learn that Jamal actively pursued being on the quiz show! The reason why is an amazing piece to the puzzle and has nothing to do with wanting to answer questions or earn money! Even the presence of his lawyer shakes out in the telling. How Jamal uses his earnings after he answers the final question makes an interesting end to the story and a perceptive commentary on human nature. While the likelihood of these events actually happening are pretty unbelievable, the way the author fitted all the pieces together in an entertaining way, while giving what I think is a pretty realistic picture of slum life in India is amazing. I'm glad I had that conversation with my friend!

Quotes worth sharing from this novel: "I feel like someone who's lived all his life by a duck-pond and suddenly is shown the sea...I feel like one of those old sailors who set sail for undiscovered seas and I think my soul hankers for the unknown." Another good one: "Remember that it is nothing to do your duty, that is demanded of you and is no more meritorious than to wash your hands when they are dirty; the only think that counts is the love of duty; when love and duty are one, then grace is in you and you will enjoy a happiness which passes all understanding." I have to read more of this author!
