The violence of Africa, of life anywhere, is played out in this story of three very different girls who grow up in Kenya during the late 50's. A daddy's girl from England with political ties to Kenya; a daughter of conscientious doctors who come to help in a tiny village; a daughter of Boers making their own way in the world on a ranch after fleeing South Africa; these are the main characters. They grow up best friends and believe that will never end, but reality encroaches and the hardships of their lives, now so individual and independent of each other causes further misunderstandings and rifts. The heat of Kenya, its past, its politics and its future hangs heavy over this story. The violence of the Mau Mau rebellion is interwoven throughout.

Ay yi yi... could Thomas Friedman be more breathless, condescending and self-centered? I'm thinking probably not. I'm less interested in the path of his "flat world" epiphany than in its causes and implications -- and I found it difficult to filter his personal and naive amazement from the equation. His wanton neologisms, combined with his inordinant wordiness made the latter half of the book unreadable. Fortunately, I remembered that I'm a product of a high-end, liberal arts education, and I know how to skim... His chapter on "Glocalism" was mildly interesting, but I would have to say, having plowed through the whole book, that the gist of it is laid out completely in the introduction. No need to read further.

You just have to love this book - such a great way to break down the dynamics of prejudice and oppression. I never tire of reading it to Chloe & Tegan

Re-read of another edition 29/5/16: When was the last time I read the appendices? I'm pretty sure I didn't last time and that's a shame. My feelings on them are similar to those I have for The Silmarillion - they're easily dismissed as an unnecessary list of kings and genealogies but for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's ambition it's a treasure trove of information about the Dwarves, Rohan and others. And that's just it - I love the story, I've grown up with it and perhaps because of grown up with it (and in light of Peter Jackson's films) I think it's easy to miss the point of Tolkien. The essence of Tolkien's work is in these appendices. Imitators who look to the epic quest are like cooks who think a leathery steak can be transformed into a delicacy by drizzling it in truffle oil after they eat out at an expensive restaurant. The oil's the garnish, the dazzling finish to the creation that made it memorable but without the care, skill and attention paid to the other parts it would be best forgotten. Although I don't agree, I can understand criticisms of Tolkien's writing but I can't imagine how anyone couldn't admire his ambition. He created a whole world of myth, sagas and legend. The Lord of the Rings is the epic in that pantheon and it gets the attention that that position demands - just as The Oddysey grabs a lot of attention in the Greek mythos. When I say I grew up with Tolkien's world, I mean just that - I'm more familiar with his mythos than with stories from the Bible, or Greek legends for example. I'm a believer.

By the time I got around to starting the over 600-page Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese, I had two days to read it before it was due at the library. I read enough in that time that I felt invested and could not return it to wait on the list again. And paid 2.50 in fines by the time I returned it! So . . . mixed feelings on this book. I wanted to like it. I enjoyed the first 50 or 100 pages, and then just kind of lost interest. But felt compelled to keep reading because I was under the pressure of a due date. Narrated by a twin named Marion--a name I had on the list to name my own twin boys--the story lost momentum for me throughout the middle. I don't know that I can pinpoint what I did not like, but something about the characters just did not resonate with me and that made me sort of not care. The twist at the end was not something I expected and it was nice to see the boys reunite, but without ruining the story for you, it was kind of forced.

Wow, what a story. This book was really fast-paced and kept me interested the entire time. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.....and now I can go see the movie! I found the characters interesting and the plot unique. The romance between the teens was a bit over the top for my taste, but I found the rest of the story really great.

I loved this book. It tells a different story of WW2...one that you never hear about. Stalin was just as bad as Hitler and it is heartbreaking to read how he treated people. Tough book to read because of the content.

Auch dieser Roman ist, wie alle anderen von S/W, ein Muß für alle Freunde des schwedischen Krimis. Das Buch wurde sogar, in den USA spielend, verfilmt.

1-30-13: Yeah I like the Ruby Oliver books. They are completely filled with teen drama, I mean: COMPLETELY filled with teen drama. And it is very funny and sad to read. Ruby is very witty and always finds herself in the most difficult dramatic situations. *** So I read this last summer (2011) and didn't realize it was a series! WOO HOO. i hate when I do that. I just read the first book today (1-25-13)...so this will be a reread! With a review to come soon! Gotta finish this series once and for all! yay! Go Ruby Oliver! *As with the first book, this does contain swearing and some sections that I had to skim through.
