I kept reading this book because the quality of the writing was good but the characters' constant nattering about relationships drove me crazy. It was interesting to see how their interactions changed over time, but I wasn't that engaged with most of the people to begin with. The novel felt like a giant math problem without resolution. Disappointing as I had heard good things about this book.

John Grogan's second memoir follows John as he grows up in his parent's extremely devout Catholic household. From a fairly young age John doesn't feel the same devotion to the Catholic church that his parents do and over the course of high school and college he continues to distance himself from Catholicism. When he marries Jenny who is not Catholic his parents almost disown him. But, as the years go on his parents accept Jenny and their growing family and their relationship improves. A very interesting look at Grogan's childhood and how he finally came to terms with his parents and their religion.

This book had such potential! After reading the first chapter I thought, "What a great book for middle school boys!" The story opens with a superhero spy infiltrating a heavily guarded safehouse and stealing away a political leader. It reminded me of the video game Goldeneye. Unfortunately, the action packed sequence in the beginning could not save the rest of the story, which centers upon the son of the superhero who, while mourning the death of his father, must grow into his newly acquired super powers.

Typically I enjoy Edith Wharton but this wasn't as compelling to me as, say, House of Mirth (which I love, love, loved). The writing is lovely and the descriptions spot-on but something about the way the three main characters interacted with each other (Newland Archer, his fiancee/wife, and would-be mistress) was somehow lackluster. May Welland was especially drab...ugh, what a drip. I found the ending poignant but it was not particularly fun to get there. I feel bad saying this about a "classic" but I was definitely disappointed, especially given how much I've loved her other works.

A heartfelt finish to the series. So sad at the same time. I loved the series and I hope the characters live long.

I've never read this book, and I never will. Not because I don't want to---I just can't! Prove me wrong!!

This is the third and final book in the Dibdin omnibus I borrowed. It starts off with a 'jumper' who falls from the dome of St Peter's onto the floor of the Nave during a mass. Now here is why I resent Dan Brown. This book, being a mystery, set in the Vatican City, centering around St Peter's, with a church conspiracy, well it reeked of Angels and Demons. Even though this came many years before and isn't anywhere as silly. That's what you get for enjoying a silly, fun beach read. My main problem as I began this book was that I took a dislike to Zen. Not good when he's the main character. I wasn't taken with his girlfriend either. This didn't get any better as the book went along. The relationship issues were so predictable as to be painful. The book got sillier as it went along with a seemingly unnecessary strain added in. It wasn't silly enough to be put in quite the same box as Angels and Demons but it was definitely heading that way. If it had been that ridiculous I probably would have been more enjoyable. It was daft enough to make it unbelievable to me. Without being ludicrous enough for me to throw care to the wind and enjoy the ride. Now I can watch the BBC adaptations. Which I'm hoping I will enjoy more. From the clips I've seen it looks like a gorgeous production. As I've decided to give Dibdin a wide berth from now on I won't be too bothered about discrepancies from the original text. And, well, it's Rufus Sewell ;-)

I LOVED this book. It was a great insight into Brooklyn in the '50s AND was a cross-cultural tale which I'm learning are a favorite genre of mine (hence my undying love for all things Jhumpa Lahiri).
