Though the story picks up in the final 50 pages, Matched is a mostly bland novel whose conceits I found to be hugely derivative of both Lois Lowry’s The Giver and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World . As a protagonist, Cassia is frustratingly passive, rarely taking action for herself and instead preferring to hang back and wait for life to happen to her. Exemplary of this is the number of times “not yet” appears in her interior monologue – even when there’s something she wants, she inevitably takes a step back, thinking it’s not time. Not yet. While on the one hand her attitude is a believable symptom of her upbringing in the Society, I can’t help but think she should have been given at least a little more agency, especially if we are to believe that she’s on a path to full-scale rebellion. And then there’s the obligatory romance. Set up as a love triangle, presumably to generate tension, it spits and fizzles but never really sparks. If anything, the relationship between Cassia and Ky is ironically predictable, given that it’s presented as somehow deviant from the Society’s carefully planned Matching procedures. Frankly, I would love to see Ally Condie go out on a limb and redirect Cassia towards Xander, if only to explore the implications of, say: 1. The impossibility of perfection in love, manufactured or organic, and/or 2. The possibility of more than one “true” love appearing in a person’s life, and/or 3. The complication of not getting your first choice, but still loving your second. However, I’m inclined to think that’s unlikely to happen. Ultimately, I’d put Matched is on equal footing with Veronica Roth’s Divergent (2011), which I read earlier this year: both show promise as far as world-building and imagination, but both leave me feeling underwhelmed and wishing for something new and fresh. My guess is this parallel will hold true for others: if you like one, you’ll probably like the other, etc. This is not to say that I won’t read the forthcoming Crossed (2011). I’m a completionist, someone who likes to see a story through to its end, and Matched is only the first part of a projected trilogy. There’s plenty of time and potential for Cassia to grow and take charge, for the romance to be fully realized, and for Condie to stake her claim as a truly original world-builder. I'm just not sure I'll be holding my breath.

What? Is this the last book or not? I'm feeling a little confused about the ending if this is the last book. I have really enjoyed Eugenies story. Their have been ups and downs. She hasn't always made the decision I would have and at times made some obviously bad one. But I still enjoyed the whole thing until this book. I didn't not enjoy it, but there were lots of slow points. I mean drag it out until I was sure we would never get to anything interesting again. We did and things picked up. I was back on the bandwagon and ready to Eugenie some how pull through and save the day after all these centuries old fae could not ;) Sadly that hasn't ever been something that bothers me about this book. Sometimes it can in books. But Mead has never really played the fae as stupid or unable to find a way. Just that they respect her power and realize what she offers that is different than them. Eugenie kicks butt even when she doesn't want to. And in this book it's the same as expected. Eugenie and company fight the big bad. There are some ups and downs and LOTS of new information comes out. As usual I don't think Eugenie appreciates Dorian as much as she should. Totally agree with her on the fact that he isn't perfect and he totally screwed up. But she likes to have a different set of standards for herself than she does others. Or maybe different than she offers the full fae since she has always been able to forgive Kiyo a lot easier than Dorian. I also have to say I'm not at all happy with the ending. I hate the choice Eugenie made. I'm not sure I can fully respect it. I get it, but it isn't her choice alone to make. She is making that choice to pretty much have her cake and eat it to at least for a while. Not right. Not right at all. I can't go into to many details about the choice or combination and what parts I don't like and what parts make more since without giving it away. The end left things open to more conflict and me completely unsure if this story is suppose to continue? It was an ending I guess, but not right for the ending of a series at all.
