This is a borderline thriller in my opinion, not your typical travel writing. I expected an exaggerated account of the frivolous escapades of two college grads in newly opened China. Though it definitely had the frivolous escapades, I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the culture, scenery and characters. From the first two chapters, you get a feeling there is something strange going on but don't fully understand the gravity of the situation until the last 20 pages or so. The book is a page-turner but slightly haunting. After Gillman’s extreme independent traveling experience in China, I am glad she has the gumption continue traveling the world; I don’t know that I would have.

This isn't your typical Charlie Fox novel, and in this case, that's a good thing (I can easily see where an atypical Fox novel would disturb my quiet). Are there twists? Yup. Action? Yup. Bad guys in need of taking down? Yup. As you'd expect. A few less bullets than you'd expect. But there was more to this. Sure, Sharp develops her characters further and further each novel--but here, they grew by leaps and bounds, a few books' worth. And it didn't seem forced or obligatory, it was wholly organic and genuine. Honestly, I groaned when I realized we were getting "undercover op in a cult compound" for a mission. But it turned out to be so much more, and a satisfying read. (I just hope for a little more action and a little less heart next time)

Anne of Green Gables as everyone knows is a charming book. However, I have to say Shelly Frasier's voice gets a bit wearisome to listen too. For me, at least, something grates.

So in case you're wondering about my sudden slew of Barry Eisler books, I read a favorable review of "Fault Line" (his first non-"John Rain" book), and thought I'd try him out. A capsule description of John Rain, the protagonist of Eisler's first 6 books, would be a Japanese American Viet Nam vet who's going to remind you of Jason Bourne--except that he's not amnesiac, is more culturally comfortable with his Japanese background, and prefers to make his work appear "natural." The 5 books that I've read so far have been reasonable entertainment, although I'm curious that there are 6, because end of the 5th book seemed like a "natural" conclusion to the series. We'll see.

Compulsively readable, although it drags considerably in the middle. Excellent world building and a lot of gender-bending--but Eon remains oblivious for far too long after the reader has solved her problem.

The Lost Saint by Bree Despain is the 2nd book in the Dark Divine Series about 17-yr-old Grace Divine. This book deals with the complications of the resolution at the end of book 1, and because I try my best to remain spoiler-free, I won't go into details on that. But The Lost Saint is of basically the same calliber as the first; there were parts I loved and parts I didn't. Overall, The Lost Saint gets a solid 4 on my ratings. The book started off really, really slow, and I started to get nervous. There was a lot of narration of the everyday life of Grace and her family, and I felt it was a little excessive for what was required to set the mood. But after about 50 pages...it got really, really, good! But first, the one aspect that I felt was a little awkward was the few times there were obvious good vs. evil undertones. Generally, I really like the concept of inner demons and a character's struggle to control them. However in The Lost Saint, there were a few times when this was stated a little too obviously for my taste, almost as if the book was giving a moral lesson. I prefer stories that present the problem, climax, and resolution, but then give readers room for their own interpretation as well. There was one scene where Daniel and Grace are talking, and it almost turns into a Sunday School lesson. I don't mind the message, but it was the uncharacteristic way it was delivered that bothered me. However, there is something about Grace's character that I really like. I think its the fact that she's not categorized. And she is a good, solid girl, and that it's normal! I think there are many, many girls like Grace in this world, and I'm glad they get a strong representation in these books. And in The Lost Saint, Grace shows her fiery side, and I like it! There is more action in this book, and its written really well. These were the times when the inner-demon concept worked really, really well. I think another of Despain's strong points is the mystery. I think these books are almost more paranormal mystery than paranormal romance. Her plots aren't super original or anything, but she paces them really well. There is resolution at the end of the story, but a very awesome cliffhanger, too! I would definitely recommend this to fans of YA paranormal romance. It would definitely be a good book for the young teenager, too. And I can't wait to see what color Grace's toes will be in book 3! :)

i was surprised to find out that this actually had more content than fluff, and the content was indeed fun! one star off for ending in the middle of a story though
