Wonderful, true account of a tragic whaling ship incident. The ship left Cape Cod and met with tragedy as a whale rams the shgip til it sinks. The ensuing story is riveting. This author is a gifted writer and researcher.

In Race, Rhetoric, and Technology (2006), Adam Banks explores African American rhetoric — the discursive practices used by individuals and groups toward full participation in American society (2-3) — in relation to technology, especially in regards to access. He questions the digital divide binary because they focus solely on access to tools without questioning the full meaning of access. Banks proposes understanding access in terms of meaningful access, which involves a) meaningful access, b) functional access (the knowledge and skills to use a tool), c) experiential access (the access to make a tool relevant to one's life), d) critical access (ability to assess the benefits and costs of technologies), and e) transformative access (the use of technology for inclusion and transforming the conditions of inclusion) (41-42, 45).

A Joe Pike series entry that continues to bring Joe's character into sharper focus. In this book he happens upon what appears to be a convenience store owner being beaten by two Latinos associated with a gang that expects neighborhood businesses to provide protection money. Joe finds the very attractive "niece" of the owner a person he would like to get to know better. Once again things aren't as they appear on the surface and Joe finds himself trying to figure out who the owner and the woman really are, why the gang has targeted them, and what the feds have to do with the whole matter. Joe enlists the aid of Elvis and the two are able to track down the true identities of the man and woman--who are not uncle and niece. They also uncover feds that aren't FBI agents and an assassin pursuing the man and woman who leaves bodies littered all over New Orleans and Los Angeles. The story moves along at a quick pace with an ending that is quite surprising. Robert Crais has written a compelling story that all readers of detective fiction will enjoy.

this book is part history part memoir/funny/depressing family story. i liked it because i learned a little about the history of new york, sugar, artificial sweetners. plus, i was entertained by the story of corruption and disinheritance.

Took a while, but definitely worth the read! It's like reading someone's dissertation. Not fast or light, but really enjoyable.

Excellent again! Interesting insight into the 'other side's' culture - in this case the Arab followers of the Mahdi who killed Gordon of Khartoum in late 19th century Sudan. Not a lion in sight this time though there was an elephant hunt carried out by the Arab's in the Upper Nile. Two small quibbles -I really found it hard visualising the River Nile running from south to north -an extra map would have helped. And -the last 50 pages or so of the book seemed to skip over a lot of story threads and could have been a follow-up book on its own.

An exhausting read, one tragedy after the other. Given the enormous shock value of the content, how can I evaluate the craft?
