Addictions and rehab could not be better felt that through this book (I mean while staying clean...). This man is not a standard drug/alcohol addict though, hes is a smart one in a way and that's what makes his success.

Princess Benevolence was use to a life of ease outside of the Kingdom. Her Uncle is king, so her family doesn't have to worry about the problems of the Kingdom and their troubles with the neighboring Kingdom. But when her mother and uncle are murdered and her father can't be found, she must step up to her position as the rightful heir to the throne. Her Aunt Sophia must train her, but Ben is reluctant to allow herself to change. But when she finds a secret room at the top of the tower, she starts her training in magic. This sends her on a magical journey filled with brooms, hard work, finding truth and the prince from the neighboring Kingdom. This book was a lot of fun. It was very beautifully written and the story was very intriguing. Murdock took a lot of aspects from different fairy tales and put little twists on them. It had the fairy tale feel without the main girl being hopelessly waiting for a prince to save her. Ben has the power to save herself, she just doesn't recognize it yet. In her growth, she learns more about herself and learns to do what is necessary to survive. I really enjoyed this book and I think Murdock showed a higher level of writing. The only downside I feel it has is that Ben's falling in love with the Prince seems very abrupt. In the space of one chapter she goes from "I hate him" to "I love him" and there isn't much middle ground. It was too out of the blue for me. Content Warning: none

** spoiler alert ** I've read a lot of Fallon's work--I place her in the competent fantasist category. With the Amyrantha series, I think she's gotten better, although still not one of my favorites. The only problem I have here is that what starts as a reasonably engaging medieval-early Renaissance fantasy world turns into a weird science fantasy, a habit I truly dislike (I didn't buy it with the Pern books either). If you write fantasy, go with it--there is no need to make it pseudosf.

When I was around 13, I saw this book on a shelf at the library and basically picked it up because it had "cat" in the title. My young Catholic schoolgirl self was horrified to find it was a GAY BOOK and probably another sign that I was going to TURN OUT GAY, if I wasn't careful. I put it straight back and was seriously upset by it. I turned out gay anyway. This year, this book popped into my head again, so I actually checked it out! It was pretty ok, weird diary type book about a girl who's having a relationship with her teacher (a dude) and struggling with being gay. Not as terrifying as I originally thought, for sure. Not mindblowing tho.
