The Lord of the Rings trilogy were always my all-time favorite books...until I read East Of Eden. So now they are my all-time fave fantasy. That seems hardly fair, though, since there isn't all that much great fantasy out there. Anyway, NOBODY writes like JRR Tolkien. Can't wait to meet him. I always know when I've read a great and timeless work of art by one or both of two feelings that overwhelm me when I've finished the last line. 1) A rush of wistful regret that it is over, 2) An immediate desire to read it over again. I felt both of these emotions when I finished LOTR. Simply the most amazing books I'd ever read - even though it was 1981, and I've read hundreds of books since, I still know nothing will ever compare to LOTR. The sheer genius of Tolkien's created worlds, races, and languages - both written and spoken! The depth given to every single character, every single conversation, every single thought, every detailed description, every journey, with detailed maps! Simply astounding, unparalleled. Many writers have the ability to evoke deep emotion, but Tolkien is in a class alone. How? Why? He is the unequaled master of controlling the reader's imagination. He takes us to the precipice of the darkest, most frightening abyss of evil, is able to hold us there repeatedly over the course of the story, yet there is always the glimmer, however faint, of hope. The deep, unspoken knowledge that Good will out - that it is stronger than Evil. We don't know how it will win, but we know. Nowhere else in literature do we find this incredible power over the mind's eye, the heart's strings. Because, really, nowhere else can we find the inconceivable heights of courage, honor, duty, honesty, humility, and love, nor the unfathomable depths of depravity, horror, greed, pride, selfishness, and hatred. In the end, as with everything in this life equated with greatness, it all comes down to Love. Truly, "the greatest of these is love", "love conquers all", "love covers a multitude of sins". It is love that wins the day in LOTR. Love for something higher than oneself. Selfless, kind, gentle, strong and unbending, unrelenting, unceasing, sacrificial, shining...love.

Just finished reading Maggie Stiefvater's "The Scorpio Races" and it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! :D I've never really read a horse book before and that was totally fine as this book was fantastic!!! :D I've always loved Maggie's books and her "Shiver" series is one of my all-time favorites, and now this book is on that list as well!!! :D I love this whole story and what Maggie did with the Irish water horse mythology and created this fictional Irish island and their race!!! :D I loved Sean and Kate (I just can't call her Puck LOL) and their romance was amazing!!! :D Not to mention the horses Coor and Dove!!! :D The supporting characters of Finn, Gabe, Dory Maude and her sisters, George Holly, Tommy Faulk, Father Mooneyham, and all of island residents good or bad were so well written. Maggie is one of my favorite writers and this book proved it!!! :D It was so action packed, scary at times, moving, and romantic!!! :D Being part Irish myself I also loved it for that reason. ;) I'm also very happy Warner Brothers bought the film rights as when I started reading this I strongly felt this is going to be a movie!!! :D And I can't wait for it!!! :D

Mirvis's unusual use of a plural narrator ('we' being the Orthodox women of Memphis) was a brilliant way to plunge readers into the strong communal identity. It beautifully illustrated the way in which a group's mentality can shift and change, expanding as it welcomes a newcomer then contracting when it feels attacked. Through Batsheva's ecstatic embrace of Orthodoxy readers get to learn about the deep spiritual resonance of holidays that can seem tedious in their yearly reenactment and can seem merely to represent extra work if we do not continue to learn, evolve & find the joy in them.

This book was another one that I couldn't put down. I was intrigued from the very start, and the depth of the story made me feel as if I had lived through the lives of each of these characters.

In the middle of this book I was like, OK these books are getting a little formulaic for me. Intriguing intro, find a key, fight some bad guys in a vault, Kendra and Seth save the day etc. But then there was a fantastic surprise ending! Whoo-hoo for surprise endings! Super imaginative.

A fun, thought-provoking moral tale about honesty, compassion, and courage. I love the little-boy narrator and the style, bouncing from one character to the next as it leads up to the climax.

I really liked this book a lot. That shouldn't be surprising to me because Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors. However, I wasn't sure if I'd like the theme of fire jumping as fire scares the crud out of me. And admittedly, I did have to skim a couple of parts for that reason. However, the fire jumping was also very interesting to learn about as a career. I never really considered that the ZUlies (as they are called in the book) might love it so much. I also really enjoyed all of the relationships in the book. From Gull and Rowan's to Lucas and Ella's. Even Leo and Irene's, though they were a mess due to circumstances and poor choices, was very interesting. Plus, the familial relationships between all of the fire jumpers was a wonderful element of the book. This book has proven to me that Nora Roberts can pretty much take any subject matter and make it interesting. Shame on me for doubting her abilities.
