Before I started reading The Emperor's Children, a friend summed it up by saying, "It's not a page turner but it's not the worst book you'll ever read." I agree with her. The way Messud tossed her characters' flaws out there and nudged them around with the toe of her shoe was entertaining. The problem I ran into was that it took Messud forever to develop her characters. And then once we understood them, there was nothing left. At the end of the book, every obstacle was left unchallenged; no problem was solved. It was disappointing to spend so much time reading this book only to have the characters worse off then they were on page one.

The kind of book you would want to take with you to a desert island. Everytime I look back at it, I find something new and interesting. Most people don't know how funny he is- his essays are a riot.

Definitely a good book, though it was kind of depressing. Humorous, too, though. The kid is one of those that finds a way to tell almost everything in a lighter manner. I just want to hit his dad, though, 'cause everytime you think it's going to get better for the family (a poorer one, in Ireland), he ARGH, nevermind. I'd just read the book, if you want.

I do not like the fact that a geisha is basically a Japanese prostitute. Or that she, Chiyo/Sayuri, finally gets to be the one she's loved all along, a married man. Other than those two things that bothered the heck out of me, it was a story told well. Very sad at some parts & other parts I was really disappointed in, but a good story.

This is the book that introduced me to Meir Shalev. It was good but "the Blue Mountain" is even better.
