I just loved this book's orginality. It was so much fun to read I actually think I could re-read it and get even more from it.(Something I never do). A huge "wow" for a first time novelist. Witty, clever, mysterious, intriging, and at times laugh out loud funny. Blue is a character I won't soon forget.

Bissinger, acclaimed author of Friday Night Lights (see review), takes an eloquent and in-depth look at the nuances of St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa's job by following the Cards through the 2003 season and then specifically chronicling an important three-game series with the arch rival Cubs. Bissinger has an amazingly intimate view of the players, clubhouse, and storyline in a remarkable period of Cardinal history with a storied manager (one of my childhood heroes while he was in Oakland). That said, Bissinger sometimes gets carried away with his flowery language and suddenly sounds like a stilted baseball outsider, just looking to drum up drama where none exists. Lastly, Bissinger is something of an antithesis to the Michael Lewis "Moneyball" school of baseball, with intentional comments whose ignorant tone undermine his credibility. I'd cautiously recommend this book to a serious baseball enthusiast or Cardinals fan, and few others.

** spoiler alert ** I wasn't expecting this book to be so bad. I don't know why -- maybe I thought that since it had spawned a TV show, it had to have something going for it. But no. The writing was awful. I suppose Sookie would write like that, being over-enthusiastic and naive and uneducated, but it was distracting. The dialogue and plot were equally poor. I read this because the only thing I liked about the TV series was Bill and Sookie, and I hoped the book would focus more on them. Well, it does, but book!Bill is so... awkward. ("I want to enter you again"? Just... no.) About the only thing the book does better than the TV series is that Tara doesn't exist, and Lafayette only has three lines. Sookie makes herself out to be open-minded, accepting vampires and guys who wear false eyelashes while hammering home the point that other people are, like, so intolerant, but as soon as two people start kissing in public she feels "a little sick." Yet we have to suffer through the most awkward sex scenes ever. Unfair, Sookie. She also has a completely overblown reaction when she realises that vampires really are supernatural creatures. Um, yeah? Did she actually believe that they're victims of a virus when a) she knows Bill's been alive for a couple of hundred years, and b) she saw him FLY?

The male journey. Now that I'm older, I'm kind of bored with the male journey. I think a good read for under 25.

One of my favorite books of all time. I loved her other Nanapush books, too, but this is the best by far. All about love, pain, poverty, degradation, and the healing power of empathy.

I loved this book! I found it so amazing that the author could coherently keep track of the when and where and around and around trekking of the main character, Henry, and also keep it easy for the reader to follow. In this story Henry time travels randomly in and out of Clare's life from the time she is 6 years old. As the story unfolds you learn a lot about each of the characters and how their lives are affected by his disappearing and reappearing at random intervals. It was a page turner!

A little too much about the guy. But she writes with honesty and it is probably how I'd be feeling so I really can't fault her for it.
