Life of Pi by Yann Martel Category: Fiction Tags: Philosophy, Zoology, Survival, Sea Report: This book has been on my radar since it was released...and although it wasn't at the top of my list, it was something that I eventually wanted to read. Hmm. I don’t know what to think. This book - it left my brain feeling a little numb (if that is the correct word). I felt that I ended up digesting most of the book paragraph by paragraph instead of chapter by chapter. The beginning is a bit dry - about the first 80 pages were hard for me to get through. I suppose mainly because I do not usually read religious or philosophical books. The main character, an adolescent boy, explores comparative religions: Muslim, Hindu, and Christianity. He ends up practicing all three because he feels that they all benefit him in different ways. However, upon saying that it was a bit slow, I also believe the beginning is essential in setting the "setting." Then there is the main part of the book. When Pi Patel is sixteen, his family and their zoo animals emigrate from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship. The ship sinks, and Pi finds himself in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and a 450 pound Bengal tiger. Pi's fear, knowledge, and cleverness keep him alive. There is a twist in the last 1/3 of the book that really makes you shake your head. And I mean that you have to sweep out the cobwebs and really think about the first 2/3 that you already read! I was extremely shocked at the ending. I mean, I was truly taken by surprise. Kind of like one of those twists at the end of a psychological movie. I don't think a book has ever done that to me. It was utterly original - and completely weird - but I suppose that is what makes it. According to Amazon.com: Life of Pi isn’t just a simple adventure story. The book’s final pages include a revelation that brings the rest of Pi’s fantastic story into question. But instead of seeming silly and fraudulent, as such twists often do, the ending makes the rest of the story that much more meaningful. At its core, the book is about man’s relationship to animals, and his relationship to God (Pi, as the book explains in some detail, is Hindu, Islam and Christian). Most importantly, the book is about faith – about how believing something sincerely can make it, if not completely real, at least close. Overall - it is NOT a quick read. But if you are in the mood to explore a lil' bit of philosophy...and ready to delve into a good story-telling...then give it a try!

This must have been an incredibly difficult book to write. We are seeing everything from the perspective of a doctor who is suffering from Alzheimer's. She is not always oriented to time and place, and does not always realize which people are with her. There are three main parts to the book: first, when she is living at home, second, when she has been moved to a rather nice assisted living facility, and third, when she escapes from that facility and wanders through the streets of Chicago. There is a mystery at the heart of the book: the protagonist's friend has been killed, and the fingers of one of her hands have been surgically severed. Since our heroine was once a hand surgeon, the eyes of the police are on her. She doesn't believe she's committed a crime, but doesn't really know. We see all the suspects through her eyes: the son with money problems, the unstable daughter, the hired help. We glean nuggets of information and learn bits and pieces, but everything is fragmented and difficult to put together. Despite this, the book flows smoothly. We can empathize with our heroine, even if we see that she wasn't always a perfect, or even particularly nice, person. You want to keep reading to find out more information. And the information is given out organically, meaningfully. I don't know if I'd describe this as a literary mystery or not, but I've never read anything quite like it and I would recommend it without hesitation.

** spoiler alert ** The terrible summary of the story aside, Probability Angels was a difficult read, but incredibly amazing. Not because of the plot, which was original; the characters, who were extremely well developed; or the dialog, which flowed seamlessly perfect and fit the characters nicely. This book was difficult because it was an incredibly heavy read. Every time I picked it up something would make me stop and I would think on it for several days. I got me thinking a great deal which does not happen that often for me. Matthew, the character you are introduced to in the description is not the main character. You would think so, since the story follows his existence as a Newbie and the change to life as Tester, but he's still not the main focus of the story. Probability Angels doesn’t have one main hero. It has five: Matthew, Epp, Kyo, Mary, and Bartleby. All of them are Testers. As a Tester, you have to obtain gain energy to survive and Push people for energy. Matthew is relatively new to his second life. Its been twenty years since he died in place of his wife and he is still learning the ropes. When his wife dies he has to make his Second Choice. He can either follow his choice for the remained of it’s life to the grave and fade out, or cut ties and become a tester and Push people into greatness and gain power and knowledge from his Pushes. This is what Epp, his mentor tells him. Epp with 2,000 years under his belt is the strongest Tester currently in existence. His character is thoughtful, highly intelligent, and arrogant. Usually arrogance is the flaw in characters, but for Epp it is a defining trait that made him push his own abilities to what they are today. Epp's best friend is Kyo, a Sammeri from the early feudal era of Japan. He is unique compared to other Tester’s and in someways more of a feared and respected anomaly then Epp. Kyo is an unknown which makes him mysterious to his enemies and confusing to his friends. He doesn’t Push. At all. How he survives for centuries which out energy from humans is a mystery, but thankful explained in the book. Mary and Bartleby are former students of Epp who respect him greatly. Mary is second guesses her own ability as a Tester and Bartleby is an overconfident child. Both characters make trumendous progress and deveolpe as the book progresses. Bartleby even gains a new ability thanks to Epp, but Barleby still doesn't know if he is thankful or pissed off at Epp, but most of the time its a combination. All five have to deal with a conspiracy plot of a former tester who starts a vendetta against Epp. Departed testers who continue to follow their choices long after they have died begin to root when they don't obtain energy, essentially becoming zombies. To resurrect the "dead" Tester he must be fed live Testers to regain energy. Now imagine a small army of one hundred Zombie Testers being put to use with the only Kyo who can successfully fight them off, but only six at a time. What I liked most about Probability Angels was the concept of Pushing. Pushing represents a symbiotic relationship for both Tester and human. Whoever is Pushed gains inspiration, you might say. The Tester doing the Pushing, if he survives, gains energy. The stronger the charge, the stronger the Push. To compare what a Tester is to something more familiar, think of them as Muses. Without them nothing would happen in the world because no one would Push them to do it. Spoiler: The one thing that did not sit well with me with the book was the ending result with Epp. The way he died was sad but perfect for the book's development. To have him come back was great as well and expected of Epp. Being awesome and surprising the hell out of people is what he does best, but after his conversation with Bartleby the whole being incredibly powerful and being an Undead Tester and overcoming his hunger to kill live Testers was a bit to much. I was hoping he wouldn't have been Undead at all and just had kept some spots of amnesia, but they way it worked out was still good. End of Spoiler. This book was a great read and really got me thinking about what Epp would say and went through. A couple of grammar errors were found, but it did not annoy me enough to put the book down. The way the story ended also left the feeling of a second installment to come. I hope not because I liked how the story closed and I don't want to see Epp be ruined if he overcame another insane obstacle of this magnitude. Definitely a book worth being place on my bookshelf. This was a goodreads first reads winner for me. This in no way affected my review of Probability Angels in anyway.

Here we are fifteen years later, revisiting the lives of Savannah, Gloria, Bernadine, and Robin. The ladies who touched our hearts and lives in more way than one in “Waiting to Exhale”. “Getting To Happy” is the long-anticipated sequel we’ve all been waiting for. The ladies are now in their fifties, but life definitely doesn’t slow down with age. One might be intimidated by the age of the characters; feeling as if they won’t be able to relate. However, their age wasn’t a factor in relating to the lives of these ladies. It’s almost as if they hadn’t aged a bit. We remember Savannah as a passive woman looking for love in all the wrong places. As we revisit Savannah, we find that her personality hasn’t changed much at all. Her character still remains true to who she has been. The only good and notable change was that she found love and married a good man named Isaac. The problem is that they’ve grown bored with their unchanging marital routine. After discovering Isaac’s disturbing online porn addiction, Savannah decides to hop on the train straight out of her marriage. Somehow, despite divorce being something touch to endure; they were able to part ways peacefully. Now Savanna is faced with having to enter back into the single life once again. Gloria is another character that seems to remain true to herself. We were all happy to see her and her neighbor, Marvin, begin something beautiful. It’s pleasing to know that they married and maintained a love-filled marriage for fifteen years. When tragedy strikes, Gloria has to find a way to pick up the pieces and continue living life. Thank goodness she has her salon, son Tarik, and his four children to help keep her focused. When hardships come upon Tarik and his marriage, Gloria is able to step in and find purpose in living life again.. Bernadine is remembered as the “strong one” of the bunch. One of the people’s favorites. After going through a nasty divorce with John in “Waiting to Exhale”.,she bounced back and married again in “Getting To Happy”. His name James Wheeler, or so she thought. That was until his real wife called to inform her he’d married Bernadine under a fake name. After “James” cleaned her out and disappeared, leaving her nearly broke; Bernadine turned to self-medication. Pills were her escape from reality. When everyone began to notice her dependency problem, she decides to make a change once and for all. Surprisingly, her strongest supporters were her children, girlfriends, and John (her ex-husband). Robin, the sex kitten herself, has been on a fifteen year man drought. Focusing entirely on the upbringing of her too-grown-for-her-britches daughter, Sparrow, she has failed to remember her own happiness matters too. After failed attempts at online dating, Robin finally decides to throw in the towel. That was until she runs into an old friend at the gym. I have to say I wasn’t entirely pleased with “Getting To Happy” as a sequel to such a wonderful masterpiece. The storyline and twists were the strong points. However the story flow was lacking. There were also some devastating character development issues in the story. The one that stood out the most is when Russell, Robin’s ex married lover, was mixed in with the drug junkie’s Robin briefly dated in “Waiting to Exhale” past. Personally, I expected a better written story from an author of seven novels. Overall, I enjoyed the story and am still looking forward to Terry’s future works. I’m glad to see her back on the literary scene after all that she has been through. Written and Edited By: Kenya Mack
