I almost didn't finish this one, but somehow I made it through. I'm not sure why, but I was never drawn into the story at all and I felt like something was missing throughout the entire book.

Wow. I have always wanted to reat this book --but I don't remember when or where I heard of it or why. I am just as fascinated by Sylvia Plath's poetry and her life as I am by this book. Such a tragedy that her life ended as it did, by suicide, with small children--what could have made her do that with them in mind? What drives the creative spirit, what tortures does it take to make a human soul bear its all, to share with the world a private hell? Yet so eloquently, so easily, so familiarly, as if hearing a story from a friend, and understanding, in the moments spent with her, agreeing that it all seems so reasonable, so "rational", almost, to be going through it . . . and rooting for her that she overcomes, and re-enters the "real world", whatever that is.

It's mostly an over-simplified view of the problems of today's world written in a pedantic style. After reading what a "life changing" book this is for many people, I think I've finally discovered the eco-crowd's version of "Atlas Shrugged".

This book is far from quality, but it's fun easy reading. Something to fill my time. I don't think I'll make it the whole way through the series because I get too irritated with the plot tricks and the way she uses Bella as a narrator. Bella is really less of a real character than just a phony fill-in for an omnicient narrator. The way she acts is totally irrational, and not just for a crazed teenager in love. Meyer can put together a good plot, but she doesn't compare to Rowling.

It's been years since I read this, but a friend recently added it to her 'to read' list and it popped up on my feed. I clicked on it to see if I'd written a review (I hadn't). Then I descried the reviews deriding the book for being misogynistic. All I can say in response is that it's sad that people will rate a book one star because a man (the hero in the tradition of Alan Quartermain, James Bond, Sam Spade and many other similar manly men who didn't tolerate a simpering fool of any sex) slaps a woman in it. This week a major Hollywood studio issued an apology for a promotional billboard with a woman (a female action hero) being choked by a male villain. Is there no appreciation for context? The hypersensitivity is madness. This book is escapist literature primarily for a male audience. The reader is no more likely to go and slap a woman, to knock some sense into her, than he is to go on a submarine adventure and walk away the owner of a rare automobile. But he is more than likely to have that fantasy, and what's wrong with it if he does? Not a thing. Is the modern man such a sad specimen that he can't deny himself the pleasure of lashing out at a daft bint when so inclined? If he is, it may be because modern authors are too politically correct to even include the act in a wish fulfillment novel of this sort. I'd like to slap some sense into the increasingly politically correct literary establishment (with all their completely ridiculous propaganda, promoting their flawed social agenda), starting with the rather lardy author who has the top review of this book. Like Sam Spade, in the Maltese Falcon, I'd tell him "when you're slapped, you'll take it and like it." Anyway, Dirk Pitt novels aren't great works of literature. They are fun, and I like them. Also, if you uptight morons want something to whine about, then read some George MacDonald Fraser (whose books I adore).

This memoir of an unabashed foodie (before foodies were cool) details a life of seeking the satiety of all appetites--food, sex, love, and art via recipes. Her tales are varied (convincing her Midwestern parents to send her to Paris for a year in her late teens), enviable (getting paid to rub elbows with the most influential restauranteurs in NYC), and simply bizarre (sleeping with Elvis while wearing white gloves). Unlike most musicals, her diversions (recipes which are easy, tasty, and the sort of thing you can picture--erm, taste--while reading) further the plot, such as "ex-sister-in-law orange pour cake" after describing her early marriage. Well thought out, fun writing, strong editing. A great read.

Tmeple Grandin is amazing and this book was totally engrossing. I am not usually "into" non-fiction, but I did not want to put this book down. Temple's insights into how animals think and what they feel - whether it's predator (dogs, cats, tigers, wolves) or prey (cattle, horses, sheep) animals - are thought provoking and a definite eye opener into how "normal" people see the world. Anyone interested in animal behavior would find this book intriguing. I am thinking of picking up her books that are about autism in the near future. (FYI, Temple Grandin is autistic, and is able to "see" how animals see. She has a PhD in Animal Behavior, and is an expert in the field of cattle handling.)

too formulaic, but interesting topic (a child conceived as a genetic match to be a donor to her seriously ill sister brings a lawsuit to be medically emancipanted). Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character (sister, mother, father, brother, lawyer, etc.), some of which are more authentically captured than others.

** spoiler alert ** شعور بالحزن غمرني حين أتممتها.. جميلة في بساطة السرد و الحوار. أحببت فلسفة رندة /لميس ..أعتقد لا تهم معرفة من منهما التي ماتت ..صح؟ تمنيتُ لو قابلتٌ آمنة .. الجزئية التي تكتشف فيها موت صالح قرأتها مراراً .. على فكرة إسم آمنة يعني: من لا تخاف =) نضال الشعب الفلسطيني لم يمنعه من أن يعيش لحظات ذات معنى كالتي في الرواية .. و وحدها رؤية الموت وجهاً لوجه تجعل من ممارسة الحياة شيئاً آخر .. ربما لأنه أقوى من كل شيء .. لكن كيف تواسي من يُراهن كل يومٍ على حياته .. سوى بأننا لم نعش / نفهم - الحياة- حقاً مثلهم .
