Favorite Quotes And he would listen, making only a few comments, always sympathetic, so that when I left him I had the distinct impression he had solved everything for me. ...it was as if when I looked into his eyes I was standing alone on the edge of the world...on a windswept ocean beach. There was nothing but the soft roar of the waves. And then there came the pounding of another drum, as if another giant were coming yards behind him, and each giant, intent on his own drum, gave no notice to the rhythm of the other. The sound grew louder and louder until it seemed to fill not just my hearing but all my senses, to be throbbing in my lips and fingers, in the flesh of my temples, in my veins. ...a summer rain had left the night clean and sparkling with drops of water. I leaned against the end pillar of the gallery, my head touching the soft tendrils of a jasmine which grew there in a constant battle with a wisteria, and I thought of what lay before me throughout the world and throughout time, and resolved to go about it delicately and reverently, learning that from each thing which would take me best to another. ...every moment must be first known and then savored. And I realized that I’d tolerated him this long because of self-doubt. It was as if the empty nights were made for thinking of him. And sometimes I found myself so vividly aware of him it was as if he had only just left the room and the ring of his voice were still there. And somehow, there was a disturbing comfort in that, and, despite myself, I’d envision his face. I was in the black silence of a medieval street, and blindly I followed its sharp turns, comforted by the height of its narrow tenements, which seemed at any moment capable of falling together, closing this alleyway under indifferent stars like a seam. ...something in me was responding now as the audience responded, not in fear, but in some human way, to the magic of that fragile painted set, the mystery of the lighted world there. As if the night had said to me, ‘You are the night and the night alone understands you and enfolds you in its arms’ One with the shadows. Without nightmare. An inexplicable peace.

The pictures in this book are so colorful and cheerful. I loved how each color is represented by a different flower/plant of that color. It made be feel very happy when I read it. Great way to teach about colors as well as types of flowers/plants. It'd be fun to read outdoors during a spring day and to take a little trip to a greenhouse or just a park looking for some of the plants mentioned in the book.

** spoiler alert ** 3.5 The triangles are getting confusing. Did everybody was engaged/slept/were married with each other? A little unrealistic. It's not even a triangle anymore, there's too many people for that. It's getting ridiculous. Easier to count the ones Denmar didn't touch in one way or another than the ones he touched. And Alric in the beginning felt like a strong character but later on he become weak and secondary. Waiting like some housewife for his knight to return home and defeat all evil. He is/was a powerful man and he did nothing, he left it all to his knight in shiny armor. The attack: I understand that Kray soldiers left (except one), what about Tristan's? They aren't mentioned, their loyalty not tested. They are ignored in a pretty dramatic scene. And it's unrealistic that all left (one doesn't count as he had other reasons for staying). And again there is the instant attraction. Gareth haven't felt any lust for a man for 2 years, but he lusts for Alric on the first meeting. I also didn't like Nadar character. He looked too stupid to be a king. Mostly the conversation there he keeps on screaming you want my kingdom and completely ignores what is said to him. He really annoyed me. And I didn't care then somehow it got through his thick skull that Gareth doesn't want his kingdom. I liked it a lot in the beginning but it started to be less and less interesting. Too much politics, scheming and keeping secrets for no apparent reason (I can accept any action, but it has to have a reason for it). The end got banal to me, dragged out. Started skimming to finish. So I mostly liked the first half of the book. Overall, the writing was good and I will read more of this author. The characters were well written too with only a few illogical actions.

I enjoyed this, especially because I felt Schmidt did a good job creating his characters and making the situation believable. (That said there was quite a bit about the parents that I really thought was overdone. I mean, how could a boy turn out so normal coming from parents like that?) I also enjoyed the relationship between the siblings.

All the Harry Potters were fun, but I literally couldn't put this one down for the last 100 pages.

I learned a lot about Afghanistan, it's history and culture. I would probably not recommend this book based on the graphic sexual and violent content. I could handle the content of war, and even the abusive relationships and hardships of women...but the *detail* of people being blown apart and the sexual content was unnecessary. It is definately adult content, and not for young readers.

Skimmed it after I realized this was a 14 day book, not a 28 day one, and as I detest late fees out of principle and was at the 20 day mark, had to take it back to the library the next day. However, the 'advanced' part of this book I didn't seem to get. Really, it was just one very large user manual, going over everything from how to bold text to some of the newer menu techniques available in the latest power point version. Really didn't come across anything extraordinarily useful, although once I actually need to make a spectacular presentation and I run to the library to get it again, maybe I'll change my mind.

Diamond picks some really neat case studies. I particularly enjoyed the chapters about the Greenland Norse. What's really nice about this book is how each vignette relates to the central premases that Diamond lays out to help us understand our current ecological situation. Diamond is also very realistic, his not an overly idealistic environmentalist who just chants 'simplify' as a mantra.
