When I read my daughter the title, she couldn't wait to find out exactly what a biblioburro is. Cute story about a travelling librarian in Latin America. Very colorful intense drawings kept her interest and she loved the handful of Spanish words sprinkled in.

I can't decide whether I liked this or not. I couldn't put it down because the story sucked me in. I couldn't wait to find out what happened. But it was a little depressing to me. Basic plotline: a doctor delivers his wife's twins in the middle of a snowstorm in the 1960s. One is a healthy baby boy, and one is a girl with down-syndrome. The doctor tells his wife that the baby girl died, but he really sends her to live in an asylum. This lie slowly breaks apart the relationship between the husband and wife, and the son and his parents. There is not really a "happy ending" to this story, so I walked away feeling a little disappointed. Not that every story has to have a happy ending. I can surely appreciate that life isn't always flowers and sunshine. But if you are looking for a happy ending, you wont find it. Read it if you are interested in an introspective, fascinating, emotional ride.

'A Little Princess' is a book I really enjoyed as a child. As a young child I enjoyed the Ladybird version and as I got older I read the full version by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It tell the story of a girl called Sarah who is sent to boarding school in England after living with her soldier father in India. To begin with she has the best of everything as her father provides everything she could ever want. Then her father dies and her unkind head mistress Miss Minchin, who has never liked Sarah, sets her to work as a servant. Sarah as a character is very likeable. She is kind to others, intelligent and uses her vivid imagination to keep her spirits up in the worst of times. She imagines she is a princess who will soon be rescued from her reduced circumstances, which indeed she is when her kindness is recognised by a servant and in time his master, who moves into the house next door to the boarding school and adopts Sarah. The illustrations in the Ladybird version are very appealing I particularly liked how they depicted Sarah's change in circumstances. When reading the story as a young child the Indian servant seemed exotic and intriguing, making the story all the more appealing. It is definitely a children's classic with a predictable happy ending and would probably appeal more to girls than boys. It affirms the importance of being kind to others and stirs the imagination.

The novel explores the empty nest syndrome theme and what happens when the nest is suddenly full again.
Not one of my favorite books of his, but this is the only one that I could find. Us? Talking Across America, in my opinion has much more of this passion in it, but this one is pretty cool too since he studied the whole zen thing. Stand up guy too, Jon and I met him at a reading and during an improv poem he asked what "those lovers" were doing back there in the dark. Lol hilarious...
