I think this was the best of all the books in this series.I loved Cassie and Elizabeth. She is an amazing mother and very protective. But so was Dash.He was protective and carring towards Cassie even when he didn't know her. When Cassie started sending letters to Dah,he was very badly injured after a mission he had taken. Her letters gave him a reason to live and thus he wanted to find her and her mother and help them. When he did find them he was determind to protect both mother and child. He used every contact he had to ensure their safety.Elizabeth finally got to trust him and let him do what he thought it would be wise to do.So they send Cassie to live with Callan Lions and his pride so they could find Grange,a druglord, who is after Cassie, cause he knows that Casie is a breed. After they sent her away,Elizabeth and Dash complete the process of their mating and later they train together in order to take Grange out. When Grange returns to his mansion Dash knows is their best opportunity to take the information he has on Cassie and condemn him.But while things go like planed and they are ready to leave with the information,Grange takes his gun, while Elizabeth does the same, aim each other and shoot.Grange takes a bullet between his eyes while Elizabeth takes a bullet in her chest. I really loved this book. The end was just a bonus..... First posted on: http://sofialovesreading.blogspot.com/

a well-managed war epic. it has problems (the most interesting character dies halfway through, and other structural issues forced on it by its historical accuracy) but it's a lot of fun to read and will last you until approximately the end of time. v-l kept me in it with his intellectual engagement with the question of why poor people would rise up to defend a conservative set of institutions (the monarchy and the catholic church) that had oppressed and in some cases enslaved them. this question is a frequent one in latin american history, often dismissed too easily on theories of poor people being stupid and easily manipulated. it takes a poetic conservative like vargas llosa to help a liberal-minded reader take the necessary imaginative leap. i have not read the classic of brazilian lit "os sertoes" on which this is based, but my impression is that "the war at the end of the world" is an attempt to correct some faults of its predecessor in answering the above-stated intellectual question. it's also an adventure yarn, which gives vargas-llosa free rein to go over the top with his vocabulary, like the book was a hollywood movie and five-dollar words were his version of CGI.

Flaubert's writing pretty much knocked my socks off...despite the fact that I didn't enjoy the story...does that make sense? Some of his sentences and cunning observations were brilliant, but...maybe I just didn't get it? Maybe I should check out the "critical essays" included in my edition for some enlightenment.

I read this book in high school and I didn't really get it. Then I read it again recently and it became my favorite book ever. I don't know if I've read any book that is as well-written as "The Great Gatsby." Here, of course, "well-written" is according to my own internal metric. Since "The Great Gatsby" was so good, I went on to read some of his other work. I read a collection of Fitzgerald's short stories, and then I read his first novel, "This Side of Paradise" but I found all of these to be much inferior to "The Great Gatsby." In fact, if I'd read these works first, I would not have imagined that Fitzgerald could have produced such an amazing novel as "The Great Gatsby." Fitzgerald had some themes that he liked to come back to again and again. The character Gatsby has many incarnations in his short stories, and then again as the main character in "This Side of Paradise." But in these other instances, the characters' traits are exaggerated grotesquely and they have none of the fullness and depth of Gatsby. These other stories read more like moralistic fables where the main character is representative of a type. In contrast, "The Great Gatsby" ranks so high on my list, that there is nothing I could ever say against it. So... Fitzgerald improved with time and experience? The effort that he put into countless drafts for "The Great Gatsby" really paid off? I'm sure I could find the answer easily by looking up biographies and criticisms of Fitzgerald. But that would take the fun out of it. I'll just make up my own conjectures as I read more of his books.

An interesting combination. Part Heroes, a bit of The Mysterious Benedict Society, and the most irrepressible heroine to fly out of the pages of a book. I want to be like Piper McCloud! Nominated for the Sakura medal 2011.

This was "required reading" for a roadtrip with an old boyfriend and some friends. The roadtrip never happened but the book was decent.

I was not that impressed by Alexie's latest. It was witty and intelligent, at times disturbing, as are all of his books, but there was something a little too trite about this book. It had the classic American happy ending that I thought Alexie was a bit above. Still, it's worth your time to read it.

My favorite part of the book was when the twins sent the toy boat away in the tub.
