I'll read anything David Liss puts out. Good page-turners and his sleuths come from a section of society that I hadn't thought about before -- Jews in the transition between Renaissance and Enlightenment. I recommend reading George Eliot's Daniel Deronda as a [more serious:] companion. Daniel Deronda lived later than Liss' characters, but Eliot's first-hand account of Jews in her day shows the persistence of our attitudes.

I am offended by this book. Not only is the writing bad, but the book is laden with stereotypes. Clearly, the writers have issues with Asian men. They're portrayed as domineering assholes who like to show off. Thus, they mainly date white. I don't know of any 22 year old ABC woman who spoon-feeds her Asian man. The main characters are around 27, my age. I find it hard to believe that one of the mothers was betrothed to a guy in her village around the late 70s! In addition, most Chinese people aren't excited to go eat at Shun Lee Palace, a Chinese restaurant that caters to Caucasian tastes. Finally, the Chinese accents made me angry. If they're conversing in Chinese, why would they have a freaking accent?

Simenon's spare writing is one of the joys of his Maigret mysteries. In this book, the detective is searching for the young man who stole his revolver before it is used for mischief. A murder intervenes and Maigret ends up in London. This tale has an unusual twist as the murder and a blackmailer are not brought to justice although it appears that they will in the future. This is not one of my favorite Maigret's......it moves much slower than his usual stories and leaves some questions unanswered. But it is still worth reading, as are all of Simenon's books.

Super cheese! nothing mind-blowing. I enjoyed his other big book, but I suppose it could be b/c I was younger then. I found this one to be more than a little generic.

First book in the series that will be 9 books in the end. As far as Star Wars books go its entertaining. Some of the parallels to current events are very interesting. Its hard to have an opinion about the book without thinking about the series overall. The series looks like its going to your standard fall - redemption tale. The authors say there will be surprises. Still its got great action and pacing.

I was admittedly more interested in learning more about the anarchist movement at the turn of the century than the Spanish-American War but the book devotes most of its time to McKinley and his expansionist policy. The parallels between McKinley's overseas policies and Bush's two wars and anarchy in the Gilded Age as our modern day terrorism are subtle yet well drawn.
