I would rate this more in the 2 3/4 star range. I liked it slightly less than I didn't like it. The concept was intriguing, but the story line felt too familiar. I was reading the Kindle version of this book and it came with an interview given by Stephanie Meyer and in the interview she said that the only way The Host was similar to The Twilight Saga is that she came up with them because both were stories she enjoyed telling herself. I literally laughed out loud when I read that. The only thing similar - she must have forgotten what The Twilight Saga was about. Both have a love triangle, both a 'girl' falling in love with a 'monster', and both two 'boys' who think they - and they alone - know what is best for the 'girl'. And, to be completely honest, more than once did I find myself thinking that Wanda and Bella were cut from the same mold. I was never able to forget that I was reading a Stephanie Meyer book. What I did constantly forget was the age of the main characters. I had to remind myself that they were supposed to be in their mid-twenties as they mostly read like teenagers. I would say that I did enjoy the book, but not enough to read it again (the true mark of a good book, in my opinion).

I read this when I was pretty young, and I still felt the profoundness of this book. I have a new copy to read this again now that I'm an adult. It's definitely in the "new-age" category, and although I don't consider myself into that type of genre, I think this book surpasses where you want to place it on a bookshelf and is truly just an amazing book.

I honestly just picked this up from the library to read the 20 page side story for the rest of her Sookie Stackhouse Novels. It was a fun little short story but didn't really change the story line. Of course for us Eric lovers it was another interaction to add to the vault (swoon)

Any girl who has ever gone through the journey of the small liberal arts big name college will know parts of Charlotte in ways that take them back to times and insecurities that are far better left forgotten. Charlotte, the brain trust of her small town, enters the world of the privledged "it's mine because I'm entitled to it" college student. It should be a coming of age tale, and it is but in the twisted way. Charlotte loses herself and every belief she held to fit in from the first day of her freshman year to the last day of her senior. Her uncooth parents embarass her, and so she pushes them away. She is so insecure that she constantly obsesses about what she wears, what she eats, who she is seen with, how she speaks, and with whom she sleeps. After a few months, it's clear that she has lost her identity entirely. My favorite part about this book is what makes it real - disturbing but true - she doesn't come back around. And I think that's a reality. When we lose ourselves, we don't get that self back, we just create a new one. Maybe that new one mimics many parts of the old self, but the new insecurities prevent it from every returning to the original. If you want a pick me up, this is not the book. However, if you have been in this world and want to appreciate how you made it through and appreciate life on the other side, you won't be disappointed.

One of the few books I've read this year that kept me up all night because I had to find out what REALLY happened. It's not a mystery per se, but after the first chapter, you will want to know why this girl who seems straight out of the 1950s is wandering around modern-day Chicago, looking for her brother in crack houses.
