We readers are often unfair to books because we approach them with woefully unfounded expectations. Such was the case with Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. I really wanted to learn something profound from this book. Something that would give me a strength that I don't feel, an insight that I desperately want (but lack), a key to my own life's troubles. Nope. None of that. But, I'll try to be fair. Frankl wrote this book in two parts. The first is a (selective) memoir of his experience in the concentration camps in World War 2 Germany. The second part is focused on his particular school of psychotherapy, termed "Logo-therapy". The book's message, as a primary of logo-therapy of sorts, to me is that people are fundamentally driven to find meaning in their own lives and that is the basis for personal fulfillment and life being worthwhile. Frankl says that there are there main ways that we find this meaning. One, is to enjoy life and experience and really appreciate its pleasures and delights. The second is to achieve something, to find meaning in your work or contribution to a cause. The third is to find meaning in suffering. Wow. I'm going for the first one. This book is really well written. He uses just the right number of words. His description and reflections on his experience in the death camps are probably the most relatable that I have ever read or heard. But, I personally have trouble relating to a philosophy of life that is based on suffering. (Lucky me.)

lacked the proportion of personal anecdotes which typically invigorate sarah vowell's history heavy works. i'd say, unlike her other books, you really do have to have a shared and serious fascination with american history to love this book.

The first couple of hundred pages were a pleasure to read. I think he should have stopped kept to telling Martin's stoy and skipped Jaspers. Jasper's story seemed like quite a lot of effort just to make the point of, like father, like son. I loved Toltz's style. His insights were delightful and funny. I just wish I hadn't wasted so much time finishing it.

I loved this book, couldn't put it down, and will be waiting breathlessly for the second and third (yes, its the first of a planned trilogy). Extremely well-written and engrossing, it flies! Loved the interesting characters and the smart, athletic, kick-ass heroine. Make no mistake, this is summer reading -- pure fluff and incredibly entertaining!

A good ending to an amazing series. I would love to go and read something about Kublai, now that I've read about Genghis.

Fatal Waters was an interesting story that had many twists. When I first began the book, I wasn't sure how I felt about it. Before I reached page 10, I had a theory of who done it. I was bummed that I had solved the crime before the story even began. However, my theory wasn't totally correct. Either way, I was still pulled in to the story and couldn't put this book down. It was a fast paced story with action around every corner. The further I got in to the book, the less and less I believed my own theory. There were times though that I thought that this book needed to be longer. That certain events needed to be more developed and detailed. Especially near the end. The book stops fast, and then goes to an epilogue. The epilogue does give the reader a little more of what they were looking for in an ending, but I still feel like I was missing something. Overall, this was a quick and intersting read that I enjoyed!
