First of all, the title page, publishing information page, and table of contents (all illustrated by Gilbert Ford) are gorgeous! The author's own illustrations grace the beginning of each chapter, and those aren't too shabby either. The beauty of this book wouldn't save a lesser writer, but in this case, it just enhances an already amazing book, drawing the reader into Peter's world before they even read a word. I won't get into too many plot details, because so many other reviewers already have. Peter is a Dickensian character who gets pulled into a magical land and find himself in the midst of an epic battle. Auxier's writing style reminded me most of Lemony Snicket, but with a little more optimism. I think it has all the makings of a middle-grades classic. Warning: The plot is pretty brutal. I would not recommend this book for children under 10, or more sensitive children under 12.

The kind of book you can read again and again.... especially in this day and age...

It took my Gothic lit classes to really make me understand what an interesting addition this is to the vampire novel oevre. Anne Rice somewhat audaciously tries to humanise the vampire - formerly the figure of utter inhuman depravity. The seductive charm remains, but is there a price (other than living on blood) to pay for immortality?

One would think, in a sci-fi adventure, involving many chase scenes and travel sequences through an ever-changing landscape constantly fraught with danger for a ragtag group of protagonists, that it would not be possible for a story to be stuffy and dry. And yet it is in this book. The premise is fascinating, a far future (on Mars) where technology works to a varying degree depending on location, and human lifespans are much shorter. (Or the Martian year is longer. People are also way taller.) I felt a little gypped based the back cover of this - Spearpoint is NOT the last city. There are several of them, controlled by 3 different factions. I do like the space elevator concept. I liked the concept of Quillan - a human/machine hybrid adapted to live in an area where no machines could thrive. However, he was ostensibly the narrator but not all that into sharing thoughts, knowledge, or feelings, AND he was not at all curious about the world around him. The characters also kept circling around to the same locations - like a low budget tv show with limited funds for set building. Every time characters spoke with one another, the dialogue scenes went ON and ON and ON. Great swathes of dialogue with no forward momentum, plotwise or in regards to character development. I felt like vast sections of this book could have been edited much more effectively. I think this would have been much better as a short story or a novella - maybe something a quarter of the length. It felt like the author was trying to make arbitrary word counts, or was perhaps being paid by the word. I listened to this in audiobook format. If I had read this as a regular book, I would have done a lot of skimming. As it is, one disk (out of 15) had a bunch of errors so I had to skip it - and I could not tell that I had missed anything in the story. Not good. I REALLY enjoyed House of Suns, so this was disappointing. I got the feeling that the author was much more comfortable telling a story against the vast backdrop & infinite worlds of space, and felt confined with a setting of only one planet, and then only one section of one planet.

More personal growth reading. Interesting, quick read. In principle the idea of seeking courage, solitude, introspection and commitment (her four key concepts) makes sense, although I think in practice it might not be the right time for everybody. I think the idea of getting away by oneself is probably quite appealing to a lot of people (myself included), but if I'm honest I wonder what kind of breakdown I might have if I spend too much time alone... Is this whole thing a spoiler alert for this book, and my whole life? Probably.

this book is pure smut and deserves negative stars. this is definitely the worst book i have ever read, and possibly the worst ever written.

The author has obviously not heard the phrase "don't use 5 words when 1 will do." He also had a thesauraus or a SAT vocabulary prep book next to his computer while writing. His style is horrific. But I will read it nonetheless because I am interested in what's going to happen to Eragon.

Mmmm... Tolkien. How I missed thee. It was definitely a Tolkien book. Everything was done in a very third person narrative style, more like he was telling a historical tale long after it had happened than anything else. You never got deep enough into a character to feel like you connected with them, but even so, the story worked. Tolkien wrote about journeys, and we're meant to connect with the events that happen on the way. It's a refreshing style, and I'm glad I picked it up.

For those of my friends that do not like language in their books, this author is not for you. If you don't mind it, it is a great read.

Good goddamn is this an awesome book. I love stories! About country folk! I think this even takes place in Tennessee, but for some reason, when I read it, it felt like I was reading about Germany. Still don't know why. This is the book equivalent of a bowl of warm stew and crusty bread. Delicious and comfy.
