Intrigue, revenge, Kashmir, and love. And then of course Rushdie has such a way with words. Didn't lose me with histrionics like Midnight's Children. Some terribly good storytelling.

When he was killed in a head on collision Don Piper went immediately to heaven. Overwhelmed by the reality of his experience he observed, "Heaven's light and texture defy earthly eyes or explanation." But 90 minutes later he was returned to his body and began a painful, depressing and lengthy recovery. As the details of his story began to fill the pages, for me, this became a hard book to finish. Then the anguish of his experience began to turn to understanding, revelation, hope and, most certainly, tears. For the rest of the book I fought back tears.

This is a curious SF book, as it is also a family dynamics book. Yes, it's about a time-displacing shell that has been placed around Earth by ??, but it also chronicles the relationships between the narrator and the brother-sister duo with whom he grows up. The scientific concepts are sound and intriguing and the relationship material mostly works. I just wish that the narrator wasn't so passive that the whole book has a feeling of moroseness to it.

I loved this book. Three fantastic books in a row. I'm going to be horribly spoiled before long. Unfit to read ordinary books! I love how the series switches focus - each book has a different main character, but the other characters are mentioned often enough that you don't miss them. The first two follow the werewolves, the next a witch/mage, then a crazy powerful (dead) black magic practitioner turned angel, and now a necromancer passing herself off as a fake TV spiritulist. It's Laurel K. Hamilton without the porn. Yay!

This and the Ideal Muslim have been truly beneficial to me. I went through a stage where I wanted to amass knowledge and while it is an admirable goal for anyone, I realised that it isn't much use if one doesn't walk the talk. This is a wonderful resource of guidelines, giving clear advice on how a Muslimah can fulfil her duties to her Lord, her family and community as well as enrich herself spiritually. I enjoyed reading examples from the Sunnah and lives of the companions. A must-have for every home - I plan on using this for my daughter's aklhaq lessons!

Saw Carrie Fisher "live" the same weekend I listened to this book, which was a bit too much of her and her gravelly voice. Mildly interesting, especially the name-dropping parts. Would have been easier to tolerate in the print version. Great cover art, though.

I think this is probably one of the most insightful books I've read on the subject of photography. It really challenges your vision and asks you to be thoughtful about how you view things through your lens. It is probably one of the few instructional-type books I read cover to cover.
