Loyalty and friendship are the underlying morals of this small but touching novel. The innocent character of Stanley reaches out to the lost and hopeless Zero. The movie is great, but the voice of the writer is catching. I recommend this book for everyone.

This book is the autobiography of Robert Graves from birth to his leaving England after the Great War. The book is long, and it is easy to lose oneself in his descriptive prose; however, among all the lyric (if that's an appropriate adjective to describe a war) prose are hidden short, declarative sentences that are pure poetry. Graves's training in classical literature is obvious. It is considered a classic study of the Great War. It is both a condemnation of the war itself and the society and its traditions (most notably, its schools)that prepared Graves for the war.

The quote on the back of the book, from the Washington Post, describes it as "a hand grenade diguised as a book." 'Nuff said.

An interesting "inspirational catalogue" of design trends for the 21st century. Rather than the top-down, technology-focused design of the 20th century, Thackara makes the argument for a new kind of almost organic design based on: - sensing and responding to the context in which the design is part, continually adapting it as needed (perpetual beta) - experiment at the edges, try bold new things that can become part of our wider society once it has proven its worth. - remix! Don't expect design to be a solitary process of creation, build on others' work, adopt and adapt it for the new designs you do. Share your creations in turn (open source it) - get people to use it early. Design should always be considered participatory design: It only improves through use and response. All in all, good stuff...

loved the ending...not too thrilled with the in between...very confusing...it is a far out story with a bunch of crazy characters...but what else would you expect from authour Tom Dorsey...

Didn't like it nearly as well on re-reading. As a child I found all of the family determinism and feudal undertones to be romantic. Not so much as an older person.

Reads like it was written by a tween. I read the entire series because I wanted to see what the hype was all about and the only one that was worth it was the final book.
