I read a glowing review of this book and so I had high expectations, even recommended it to my book club to read. I liked it fine, I learned about the family of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth, and about Polish aristocracy and celebrity, and a new aspect of American pioneering. There were parts I liked more than others, and literary gimmicks I appreciated and some that I didn't at all (I liked reading the list of everybody's reasons for setting off for America, and I like reading Maryna's husband Bogdan's diary; but I didn't like the book ending with the actor Booth's monologue at all. This was the first I've read of Susan Sontag's and I have to admit I expected more from the experience.

Decent thriller. I don't like math, but I liked this book. Good plane read.

The beginning was slow as was the ending but the meat in between was very satisfactory. It was a difficult book to put down.

I'd like to give this a 3.5, because it's not quite excellent but it's not exactly average eithe.r (My ideal ratings: 5 - Unforgettable, 4 - Excellent, 3 - Average, 2 - Painful, 1 - WTF). This was a fun book with engrossing characters and an exciting storyline, but at moments the leads felt superficial and it was distracting.

Good collection of short horror stories, in the grand style of H.P. Lovecraft. I read this book because I found out that DJ Spooky borrowed the title for his first full-length record. It was good, but not as good as some of Ligotti's other stuff.

I hadn't read this book since I bought it when it first came out. I started it tuesday night and finished on wednesday evening. It was one of those books that you're bummed when you reach the end. Lynda Barry is one of the most awesome authors ever! I discovered her daily comics in a San Francisco newspaper back in 1997 and i've loved her stuff ever since! Especially Marlys and Maybonne!

The first time I read this book, I was turned off by its hipsterness. The second time I read this book, I was overwhelmed by Clare and Henry's love. The third time I read it, I was saddened when I realized Clare's life was so wrapped up in waiting. It is interesting how our reactions to books gauge where we are in our lives, huh? And now when I think about this book, I'm always slightly bothered by the fact that the story is very accurately and descriptively set in Chicago, yet there never seems to be any scenes of Clare and Henry sitting in traffic or stuck on the Red Line.

** spoiler alert ** I really liked Marian (aka Ninja Marian), couldn't quite stand the way Collins made Laura child-like after her stint of "dying" although I know it was in order for her to be "reborn" so she could eventually marry Hartright, and I liked Count Fosco in a I-love-to-hate-you sort of way until after the Postscript section. Fosco sort of lost his evilness about 50 or so pages after that part for me.

This is one of three books I read during a week on Cape Cod extending over the fourth of July weekend 2011. It's a rollicking good tale, exciting while it lasts, and well researched in terms of its details about Vietnam today versus Vietnam during the war. I read it because "it was there" in my in-laws house and they had read it before visiting Vietnam. I'm glad I read it, but it's really a TV adventure movie when all is said and done - granted, with a lot of well researched local detail. The author served in Vietnam in some of the exact areas he writes about, so there's an unmistakable authenticity there. I recommend Annabelle Nelson's review(I do not know her, but her review is on this site): Annabelle Nelson Sep 01, 2009 Annabelle Nelson rated it 3 of 5 stars Paul Brenner, a former army infantry man in Vietnam, army intelligence investigator, and now retired gets rope into going back to Vietnam on an ambiguous mission of finding a person who had seen a US captain kill a US lieutenant A young woman, Susan Brenner, is an investment banker in Saigon and inexplicably pursues Paul sexually as well as a logistician to help him with his journey north of Hanoi almost to the Chinese border. I liked this book a lot, it was formulaic with the older thick skinned, smart ass rebellious hero in league with a younger femme fatale operative, almost like a Sean Connery movie. But the vividly, detailed research on the Vietnam battles, the evenness in presenting both the US and Viet Cong atrocities, and the viciousness of power politics in back room make the book almost great. He draws interesting characters making even me like a male chauvinist, and making the head of the Vietnamese police interesting even as he tortures people. More than a good read.

I found Steig Larson's books initially difficult to get into but after the first few chapters, I was hooked. I think the translation from Swedish may have been the problem. Highly recommend!
