The constellations, cusp between modern and traditional, the iron bed moved up and down the stairs, the dissection of love as if it were some sort of strange insect on the bank of Tinker Creek: some of my favorite things.

A rivetting tale of the tragic events that happened on Everest in May of 1996. Krakauer's book is well written (he is a journalist after all) and it is from his own experience. For those reasons I give it 4 stars. I didn't give it 5 because I felt that it came down to negatively on a number of people who were also there but on different teams than Krakauer. I highly recommend reading The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev immediately after finishing Into Thin Air. It should be considered a companion book and shows a very different take on the same events from one who was heavily criticized in Krakauer's book. It will give balance.

Liked it. Read it over the weekend. The narrator is a five year old boy who is secure in his life in the "Room". His "Ma" has created an atmosphere of security and love for him, nurturing him, entertaining him. There is a central threat and much change midway through the book. No spoilers. Easy read. Had to read it as I've seen it on many top lists for 2010. (This is not to be confused with the horror movie "The Room".) Recommend.
