fascinating study of the birth of consumer culture in france. so much has been done with consumer culture in america, but little has focused on the continent. tiersten writes in clear, lucid, accessible prose. her thesis is indisputible the way she presents it, and it will certainly be one of the classics in gender history. there are also many illustrations which help the book along, and is all around enjoyable while being "real" history. (the author is also an incredible lecturer, who doesn't assign her own writings as homework. just in case you think i might be biased.)

My impetus for reading this book largely came largely from my fondness for the author's superior The End of Science. The title of this book is a bit odd, since it doesn't make any particular case for the rationality of mysticism. The book is an easy read, but some of the gurus it discusses are not even interesting in their oddness. The author seems as fascinated by psychedelics as he does by spirituality, and the reader will likely come away having learned as much about the former as the latter.

I took to this book slowly. It wasn't even on my radar until it received a Cybils 2010 win. But gradually the story began to eat at me. A brother full of anger, a world full of secrets and a jarring series of action-packed twists and turns. I highly recommend it as a straight-through read. Don't take time to catch up on any other story - leave your movies, TV shows and RSS feeds aside. There were a few faltering steps to the story about 85% of the way in, but by then I was so satisfied in the thick heft of pages already moved to the left side of the book that I hardly cared. I like that an obvious twist took me by surprise and I look forward to seeing what else becomes of the story. Fact: my eight-year old sister is all totally "not scared of the cover, but can we look at it one more time... okay... can we put it away now?"

I had to buy this as soon as I finished Wicked. The story just gets better. How horrible we can be to one another. How compassionate we can be. This book does what most great books do; it holds up the mirror to the human soul. Problem is, he sneaks in some much great stuff around the edges of the mirror. I kept getting lost in the story.

This was a fine story. It felt somewhat formulaic (the heroine meets 2 men - guess whether she ends up with the first one she starts dating, or whether that relationship goes wrong and she ends up with the second one that she was initially less interested in), but not completely so. The subplot about the blue coat and the parallel friendships was both interesting and touching. I felt that the plot and characters deserved better writing, which I would rate as average. As in many novels of this caliber, some of the dialogue felt stuffy and overly formal, as if the writer were trying to make sure we all know she knows not to end a sentence with a preposition, rather than trying to capture the way a character would actually speak. Overall, this was a fairly enjoyable read, but not terribly substantial.
