The surrealist origins of Queneau's work is more appearant in this book than in Pierrot Mon Ami (which predates Zazie by 15 years). It is no surprise that it was adapted for film by a new wave director of the times. The youthful, freewheeling spirit of the story reminds me of early Godard. Zazie is a very intriguing character. Not quite a Lolita, her antics often trangress too far to be called innocent. But she is clever and engaging. She goes to Paris for a weekend, so that her mother my persue her new beau, and stays with her Uncle and Aunt. The Uncle is an enoumous character, yet dances ballet in a gay night club for a living. Queneau proliferates characters continuously as the story's pace speeds up in Zazie's escapades around Paris during a Metro strike. The characters banter like a Marx Brothers movie, but their actions are more like slapstick. But with any Raymond Queneau book, what really counts is the style. His sentances gleefully pervert the precision-fetish of the French language. The translation is very good at conveying the puns, neologisms, and cheeky nuances Queneau put into his writing. Like a Godard film, this book is self-reflexive, consciously theatrical, and a thumbed nose at naturalist expectations.

Be rejected by someone who doesn't deserve you, _then_ read the novel. Trust me, it helps you get in touch with your inner teenage angst - a requirement for getting the most out of this book.

I learned a few interesting terms for human decomposition from this book, and there are a lot of amazing anecdotes about forensic research, both before and after the advent of DNA testing. It was kind of awesome, hearing the different ways people can be identified from just one single bone of the body. The lurid crime cases are well worth reading. Bass is both a decent storyteller, and particularly vivid in his descriptions of rotting human flesh. One of the issues with this book, however, is that he continually repeats himself, in ways that become sort of annoying. The same pieces of qualifying information appear every twenty pages or so.

When I was reading this I felt like Chuck was writing about my childhood. Except I didn't really dig "Shout at the Devil" that much. Very fun read!

I love the Bible. Along with the Book of Mormon, I read these books more than any others.
