A poetic, grand, magic realist story about a New Year's Eve celebration held by a working-class Chilean family at an Argentinian construction site. Aira is sweeping at first as he ruminates human behavior as it reflects the everyday concerns of his characters. The tiniest detail opens up a universe of thought and reflection and often some kind of truth. The Viñas family lives and works in a haunted condo development. The ever-present nude male ghosts enter and exit as they please, though they are largely ignored by the family save for the pre-teen daughter, Patri, who is fascinated by them. The central narrative unravels just a bit toward the end, other narratives having already been unraveled or cast aside. Characters’ dialogues becoming more absurd, reflecting the slightly drunken and highly festive countdown to the New Year. The mother and daughter’s unbelievable discussion about the ‘virility’ of males is central to the daughter’s ultimate and predictable decision. The literalness of their language is in contrast to the subtleties in previous scenes, with one very important exception: Patri's dream in which the whole of architecture, including unmade works, is theorized. Aira is quite clear with his language, if not his vision, and the ghosts hovering over like death cause mainly ambivalence within the family. What do they represent? Death itself? The unspeakable? The abstract? Aira’s choice is to allow the ghosts to embody all this and more, without explanation to the reader, while they remain quite literal as ghosts.

This memoir of Kerman's year in prison was very interesting. I enjoyed seeing the inside of the system from her perspective. I think the fact that she, along with so many of the people we meet in her book, was imprisoned at all is ludicrous. Kerman was luckier than most, she had access to good lawyers and had a tremendous support system outside - both of which she admits upfront. The last few chapters were the most poignant, I think, as Kerman is forced to confront some of her demons in the flesh. Well-written and absorbing.

If I could give this 6 stars I would. This was an amazing story...amazing. While the story was about the evolution of the computer industry, it could have been the start of any business. I have to admit though, being in the technology field, this did appeal to me. It was a great story of the journey of a group of 4 young friends (each different types of people with different backgrounds) with ideas about the future and who they are, and who they ultimately become. They set off to change the world and as they find out who they are in the process. The story centers mostly around Suzanne (Susie), a very smart 25 year old from an aristocratic family that follows the rules, but is very passionate and is dying to come out of her shell. She does this in a dramatic way was becoming a runaway bride, leaving everything to be with a man she is drawn to Sam and his dreams. Sam (age 24) is the kind of guy who has great visions for the future is also extremely passionate. He doesn't think of the details and often gets ahead of himself. He likes to live on the edge and anything else is just plain dull. He works with a college buddy Yank, who is a techie to the core.....not big for the big picture and is very passionate about technology and solving problems....he's simply brilliant He doesn't seem to have an emotional side, but we find that is not the case. They take on a partner, Mitch (31) very technical, business savy and sucessful, who is just coming off a break up with his life and is looking for something new and challenging....All 4 are very passionate, in similar, but different ways. They compliment eachother and build a business together. Then there's Paige, Suzanne's estranged sister, Angela (Sam's Mom) and Suzanne's dad.....They all add to the great cast of characters that are so vividly drawn that you can see who they really are....And really, I have to say that I loved each of these characters, in spite of or because of their faults. I have to say that there were certain aspects of the story that brought me to tears and it didn't have anything to do with the romantic aspects of the story. Sometimes being close to certain people can make you a better and a stronger person. There are also things that you love most about a person that also be the very things that can tear you apart. I don't want to give too much away of about this story, but I can tell you as I sit here a little misty right now, I will be thinking about it for a while. It's one of those stories that will stick with me for a very very long time.....One of my top 10 reads of all time.

Shades of Milk and Honey is an historical romance set in an alternative version of Georgian England where illusion magics are common and are expected to be learned as part of a lady's accomplishments. The author makes to imitate Austen in style and setting, but the result falls flat.

3.5-4 stars. This is a novel where what you see is what you get. While being a enjoyable read and well written, it holds no real surprises following a fairly predictable path all the way to its conclusion. I'm hesitant to give a full 4 stars simply due to its predictable nature. If you're after a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat story, then you won't find it here. On the other hand, if you're after a novel that will keep you happily entertained for a few hours after a tiring, stressful week, then this novel is definitely worth a look.

3.5 stars. Really interesting setting and subject matter. The writing was good too. I think I'm rating it lower because the characters were all pretty despicable and the selfish choices that led to the ending left me uninspired and bugged.

This booklength essay explores the archetype of Dionysus. A precursor to the Christ archetype, this figure has within it ideas of divinity and humanity, death, and resurrection. However, unlike the Christ archetype many of us have grown up with and have been taught, Dionysus is an incredibly complex figure that is intimately related to the body and its vicissitudes, and shares a special relationship to women and femininity, madness and dance. If one shuns the body, emotions (which are usually felt in the body - heartbreak, thorn in my side, for example), and instincts (I've got a bad feeling about this, for example) one risks Dionysus coming back from the shadows to bite you on the butt for forgetting about him. I'm a big Dionysus fan, so I was excited that there was another book out there about the subject. Not exactly light reading, but significantly lighter than Kerenyi's or Otto's work. A two-thumber.

Sarah Dunan is an expert here. You know quickly the characters; they are so three dimensional and have chracteristics that one recognizes and relates to easily, including the dwarf. Her research and fill-in are both great. I didn't put women's issues on this because so much of this is part of the period, and much has come in it's own way and is still present in much thinking. The book starts with the sack of Rome and the main characters move to Venice as well as some others that escape. It was part of the religious wars, and all the fury is expressed. And nobody is really that sweet or that innocent. It may be in the name of religion, but it is politics and power. And, riches and beautiful things. I intend to read more of her books.
