I may be tiring of Fforde's Real World/Book World schtick but I didn't find this one as entertaining as his earlier installments. This time it is the "written" Thursday who is the protagonist and the convoluted tale traces her search through the Book World for the real Thursday. I think his new Shades of Grey series has more potential. Only for hardcore Fforde/Thursday fans.

this was my 1st angela carter book, and i definitely want more. very surreal and dreamlike, reminded me a lot of the imagery in terry gilliam films (brazil, baron munchausen, dr parnassus..), and maybe also a little of tim burton's big fish. of course this book came before all of those, so i can't help but wonder if it was an influence... it is, as the cover suggests, a lot more graphic than any of those films, and often brutally violent. an intensely visual and inspiring read, not for the easily shocked.

Perfection, obviously. Granted it is weird to read (well, listen to) this as an adult and realize how racially problematic these books are. Also problematic is my desire to give her a complete pass for being an old lady who grew up on the prairie. Whatever don't think about that!! Just think about how sweet and honest these books are. And Cherry Jones was a bomb narrator. And it was a genius touch to get a fiddle player. A+++
