Ultimately, the book appeals to the emotions rather than the intellect (but perhaps rightfully so). It is not a serious anthropological study by any means. Certain facts offered in the text could be disputed, her frequent analogies range from unneccesary to utterly ridiculous, and her attempts at providing evolutionary explanations for the long-enduring behaviors exhibited by Ju/wasi--and the rest of humanity--are amateur at best. Rather, its value lies in in the unique insight it provides as a personal account describing Elizabeth's firsthand experiences as an outsider among the Ju/wasi, and, for whatever it's worth, the nostalgic recollection and reflection offered by a person who has witnessed great change in his or her lifetime. And perhaps most noteworthy, the people known as the Ju/wasi are transformed from some exotic culture in a farwaway, obscure land to individuals that people from a vastly different way of life can relate to, sympathize with, and mourn for.

The boy was about fifteen years old when he died. He had traveled to America from Europe. He likely died as a result of violence. Oh, and he lived and died 400 years ago in the colony of Jamestown. So how do we know anything about who he was or how he died? Written in Bone tells the story of scientists and historians who excavated graves at Jamestown and studied the remains to find out all they could about these early colonists. Including brilliant photographs and tons of cool facts, this book is great for anyone interested in history or archaeology. Extensive source notes and references make it great for research and the conversational tone and photos make it excellent for recreational reading. Highly recommended. One of the rare cases where I enjoyed the movie much more than the book. Not a fan of this book.

I love Pat Conroy. I love the way he describes people and places and, God, food. I want to visit South Carolina, meet Mr. Fruit, and eat the food his mama makes. Not done with the book yet, though. I hope it doesn't disappoint! Hmm...I finished this last month and never updated. So I liked this a lot. Oh, Pay Conroy. You're so great. And then you didn't stop writing. You just kept going with the story and it got not as good. Why didn't your editor tell you to just stop?? Still, not bad overall.

The plot of this book, like the movies in which Annie Fang is cast, does not summarize well. It is a bizarre tale, most likely picked up out of pure curiosity (as was the case for me--that plus amazing reviews). The action is driven by a mystery, but I knew as I neared the climax that no matter what the outcome, I would not be satisfied. The Family Fang is a book about the journey of characters who are too far gone to end up anywhere good--yet I still hoped for a better ending than the one Wilson provided. This debut novel shows great promise, and even if it doesn't fully deliver, I look forward to seeing what Wilson produces in the future.

I thought this was a very good book, and liked the idea of retelling the story of Little Red Rididng Hood, however the ending was a little confusing.

Some interesting anecdotes and recipes; you can tell the author really loved the Clintons and Hillary's approach to food. (And was somewhat less impressed with George W. Bush and his desire for peanut butter and honey sandwiches with chips on the side, heh.) I was reading this book the night the Penguins won the Stanley Cup!

Frustrating story but a good read. James is a brilliant writer. It raises questions about what the "American" girl means and who she is.
Böylesine eğlenceli bir kitapla ilginç bir tarih dokuması.
