I read this book over several days, and each time I sat down it was like a little journey overseas. Riccardi writes sensitively and sincerely about her sojourn to Japan to learn about tea and food culture. Unlike so many other travel and food writers, she doesn't gush, and I don't find that she romanticizes either. I've since encountered her articles in food magazines and have enjoyed all those as well. She has convinced me of her integrity!

LOVED it, but then again i think most people did (not a bestseller for nothing). re-invigorated and revolutionized memoir genre. also of note, is The Beliver, my absolute favorite literary journal founded and editer by Eggers (who founded McSweeny's, which does a quarterly literary publication as well). not too mention 826 valencia (google it) is fucking rad as hell.

Yeah, I read this one (too). I mean, after seeing it every single friggin day on the L train each morning I couldn't resist. And then I could barely continue. I wanted to put it down so, so many times. And I like a good yarn! I'll totally get into a Dan Brown whirl from time to time. But this was just so bad. Thank you, Stieg Larsson for so thoroughly and unironically dotting every scene with IKEA products listed by name and 100% formica characters. I finished it...so reluctantly. The good news: the movie is better than the book! It's very good in fact! I'll be watching the remaining two in this series instead of reading them. Another interesting note? In my conversations about this book, nearly every woman I know that's read these books LOVES them, uniformly because they love the main character Lisbeth Salander. She seems to resonate as a bit of modern female James Bond with women young and old. I totally get that. And now when I look around on the L train I notice that the vast majority of readers are indeed women. Life is funny.

Pete, a "perfectly practical pig" saves Pickles, the boisterous elephant, from the circus. Pickles and Pete strike up a joyful friendship until Pete simply can't handle the chaos that Pickles brings into his life. After a very scary flood, Pete realizes that his friend truly makes life worth living. There is so much to love about this book. The illustrations are an important part of this complex story. Early in the book, we see that Pete has several well know paintings hanging on his wall. Breathed uses these pieces of art throughout the book in a way that is fun, interesting, and thoughtful. Breathed also uses a variety of styles, which really enhances the tone and feeling of the story. I'm not sure that this is a great book to use for instruction in a library program and I'm not sure that it would make a good whole group read aloud. But it's a wonderful book and I look forward to reading it to my own children one day.
