Really great writing and story telling. The story is about 2 generations in an Indian family as they assimilate into America. Gogol emulated the struggles one can face while balancing two contradicting cultures.

I was referred to this book by my friend's master's thesis, and was duly impressed. This is an interesting topic to me as many friends of mine have grown up overseas or are in the process of beginning careers working overseas with government, NGOs, or missions organizations. I think this book is a great resource for anyone involved in any way with people raising families within multiple cultures. I'm interested to see if there is any research on the similarities and differences between growing up as a Third Culture Kid and growing up in a multiracial/multilingual/multiethnic family.

This book was part of my eventual frustration with what is now known as "cutting edge queer lit..." All I really wanted was to read sappy love stories of boys meeting boys, and instead i open this book which has a combination of creepy looking illustrations and sock puppets and fairly graphic accounts of people getting raped and disemboweled (or not-raped and disemboweled...). I suppose it has it's place in the grand scheme of literature, but, like the S&M clubs that I don't go to throughout the West Village and Chelsea, I think I'd just as soon leave this stuff on the shelf.

This was the first book of Atwood's that I ever read. Afterward I decided to read all of her novels in 2011 if possible... and I only have 4 to go. The short stories herein were particularly engaging because they all featured the same family and filled in such fascinating details in a non-chronological manner. It would have held up as a novel as well.
