I enjoyed this. It was well-written with a very good mystery and interesting characters. I was afraid that there would be too many gardening details, but that wasn't the case. In fact, the gardening was pretty much secondary to the lawyer details from China's previous profession - which helped her out a lot in solving the mysteries. My one complaint is that McQuaid went camping with his son half way through the book and never appeared again. This is another cozy mystery series I'll definitely read more from in the future.

I don't usually like to read a series out of sequence and while I have read Howl's Moving Castle many times (and nearly built a religion of rewatching the movie) I have not read #2. Yet here I am, reviewing #3. There are as many ways to enjoy a series as there are doorways revolving in a wizard's house. I'm familiar enough with Diana Wynne Jones work to know that you can pick up any of the books in any of her series and read from anywhere and be instantly (if not literally) enchanted. This was no exception. I adored the bookish main character Charming/Charmain and a world in which magic is common, though not quite respectable. So many complex ideas (folding time/space, willful magical objects, etc) are unpacked simply and greedily as a suitcase full of pastries. Bon appetit! I read it through in one sitting. It's that tasty.

I love this book. I first learned about it a couple of years ago when it was recommended as a summer read on NPR. It is fabulous. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. It is a myserty wrapped up in romance and it is about book lovers. Nothing could be better!

I actually prefer the movie - but that is what I experienced first. Everyone I've met who started with the book, preferred it. I think that the plot differences between the the two versions change the main relationship dynamics. Though the film and novel end differently, each ending seems appropriate given the context of the details given in the preceeding two hours/several hundred pages.

I loved this book because of the writing style. I did not love Edward Tulane at all, by the same author, but this one was so simple and elegant, it was like opening a present where you don't expect to find one.
