Animals have a quality, unlike any human, that melts away all present thoughts and cuts down to the bare-bone compassion that exists in all (most) of us. This book really made me think about my dog, Dixie, a lot and the role she plays in my life. It wouldn't be the same without her. She reminds me of the innocense and forgiveness this life is suppose to have, much the way little "Lava" did in this book! If you can handle some saddness (of war stories) then this is a definite read!

An important book, with a message I am obviously prone to love. I expected to really enjoy it, especially as I grow more and more interested in dystopic fiction. But was disappointed. Maybe if I'd read it younger, it would have been more enjoyable? I'm not sure. But the female characters are jarring, uneven, devices, and the characters emotions, while perhaps justifiably confused, feel rather to leap and bound in an ungainly and overwrought fashion. It felt preachy and showy, when it could have let its very dark world so the talking instead. I don't mean to offend, I know this is most likely literary heresy, but I expected more from a novel usually listed alongside 1984 and Brave New World. And I'm torn: trust my first reading or give it another chance?

This was a barely acceptable fantasy-type historical romance. The characters were kind of predictable (especially for someone who has read so many fantastical/paranormal romances). It did offer some new notions of the celtic fairies, which was interesting, but overall it just wasn't enough to truly grab me. I'll tell you what did grab me, though... and not in a good way. The man on the cover of this book is UGLY! Everytime my husband saw me reading it, he would say "How can you read a romance book with THAT on cover??" LOL
