Well, I've put off reading this for so long, because I hate to run out of books by my favorite authors. Within 50 pages, I was totally hooked and was so glad to be reminded why I love Irving. The last few I've read (Widow..., Fourth Hand, Until I Find You) weren't as satisfying as the "classics" (Hotel, Garp & Owen Meany). But Cider House was so satisfying on so many levels and I think competes with Meany as my favorite. If there was any downside for me, it's that I felt the ending was somewhat inevitable, and I didn't necessarily need all of the intricacies of the "15 Years Later" section. But getting there was still a wonderful journey, full of the unforgettable characters and often hilarious, frequently moving, always compelling experiences they endure. Dr. Larch may be one of Irving's greatest creations. And it's the mark of a great book for me if I can see myself as, or want to be, one of the characters, which is how I felt about Homer Wells. I was very sad for this book to end. Now if I can only get through Son of the Circus (which I've given up on once before!).

Well written. Not quite as funny as some Pratchett, and a little confusing on the place the characters hold towards the end of the book (who is the love interest? Is there one?). Fans of this particular set of characters will enjoy the continuation.

Really great writing, but I wish I had read this as part of a class or something because I am sure I am only getting the very surface meaning of what he's trying to express. I'll have to read it again sometime, but not before I pick up "Love in the Time of Cholera."

I think that the South Beach diet was a great thing. The first 2 weeks are the hardest. After that, life is easy. However, once you go off the diet, it is really hard to get back on. Really, what's life without carbs? Bread! Bread! Bread! Brrrreeeeeaaaaaadddd!

I thought this was a really great comment on what women are capable of doing to and for each other. Loved that it was all over L.A. and its descriptions of yearly fires and the Santa Anas.. Some points in the plot seemed like it was just for shock value. I know it's about foster care, but (don't wanna give anything away) where did those dogs come from?

There are kingdoms and magic, the author describes everything in full details; the reader can actually picture the scenes taking place. The author also details the main character's flashbacks to her life before she lost her family, the reader won't be confused in this novel. The main character is intelligent, brave, and caring. She is very easy to get to know and like. She picks up a few friends on the way to her destiny. Jeremiah, a protective, kind soul, really appears to love Chalice. Bunejab is amusing and the one who provides the comedic relief in the story. Ben acts as a guide to Chalice. The plot itself is very unique and inventive, perfect for the genre. The events are fairly fast-paced, there is plenty of dialogue-almost too much. The characters are the deciding factor for this novel, they can really pull a reader in. This book is recommended to young adult/teen readers who enjoy fantasy.
