Time To Smell The Roses by Michael Hoeye was no suprise to me. It was an excellent addition to the Hermux Tantamoq series. I was very happy to see that Hoeye added another book to his collection and hopefully continues. I would encourage anyone to read this book of all ages, but first I would read the previous ones.All in all, this books gets a 5 out of 5 rating.

Miri and the other girls in her village are forced to join an academy, from which the prince will choose his bride. Though certainly written to a child's level, this book is unique and surprising at every turn. Definitely worthy of the Newbery Honor it was awarded. (Review written 12/30/2007.)

Pretty much what it says on the tin, but baby fic and a lot of the contrivances needed to make it work doesn't really work for me. Does a lot of telling, not showing, but it's supposed to be a fairy tale.

Interesting to say the least. Now, I'm sure many people say that McCandless is an idiot. I wouldn't necessarily say that. The idea of being out in the middle of nowhere, no people or electricity or modern conveniences, living on your own schedule and your own knowledge, is an attractive one at times (but, then again, I can do that whenever I like not very far from home. I live in Montana). I could see my husband wanting to do something like that. While he wasn't an idiot or necessarily stupid, he lacked common sense. Common sense would dictate that you take a map, that you don't eat things that aren't specifically mentioned as being edible (even if another part was), that you take a larger caliber than a .22 (he's lucky he brought down a moose with it; if you didn't take a good shot, you might just piss it off and it'll charge and trample you), that you at least pack extra freeze-dried food (just in case, even if you have no intention of touching it). You learn about the area (like when spring flood conditions usually happen). Just charging in blindly, you automatically raise the odds that something will happen to you. It's too bad when a couple of simple and almost painfully obvious things being overlooked causes a death. It was a grand idea and I'm sure it was a wonderful learning experience, but if you aren't prepared and you don't have a death wish, use your head and at least prepare a little before you go live off the land for a while.

I'm SO not going to finish this one. I just hate, hate, hate the way Informal English is put together. I wasn't expecting what is, basically, a compilation of a few different lists of regional phrases; I was expecting a more substantial book, more of a conversation. I might have liked it better if Kacirk had done something interesting rather than a simple alphabetical listing, like . . . I don't know, grouped things by region? Something along those lines. To add to my irritation, there were a few entries in the first handful of pages that I attempted to straight-read that had what may or may not have been typos. I couldn't tell. For example: the headline for an entry is spelled one way, then in its example sentence it's spelled differently. Once I decided to skip around in the book, I enjoyed it more, but overall, the format ruins this one for me. Two stars instead of one, since there are some awesome finds in there if you can get past the dictionary approach.
