Deep Breath. This book, which was a selection for my local women's book club, was a real disappointment. The premise was great, as many other reviews have stated, creative and fascinating. "Primitive"/ "civilized", matriarchy/patriarchy/fraternity...all these concepts interested me. My expectations rose accordingly and then nose dived after a dozen or so journaled entries. Although I am not a historical fiction snob where everything has to be just right, this book stuck me as very Louis L'Amour for women...dates, language, and other things get very blurred to continue the story. I like sex, but the real kind, so I usually stay away from the book kind that so other many females like (I am not fond of you-Tarzan, me-Jane types or the pert, nubile woman quilting in a rocking chair while an overly tanned giant dressed in plaid chops logs stares at her types). This book was full of the main character, May Dodd, saying things like "show me how a civilized man makes love", or "Oh, dear...Oh my, I had not intended...Yes, isn't that nice, isn't that just lovely?" This book needed a different cover, a cover with a fetching white woman dressed in deer skins swooning in the arms of an Indian Chief while a white US military captain looks aroused and jealous in the background. That kind of cover would have given me fair warning, and "strangely enflamed" the hearts of many a bored housewife. If you have read this book, and are looking for more borderline lit. fic. quasi-historical woman power romance, try Ahab's Wife. At least that gal gets to lay with Queequeg and Ahab, meet Nathaniel Hawthorne and Emerson,and engage in cannabalism (always nice). Plus, the writing is much better.
