A good beach/leisure read--disturbingly suspenseful; at times, quite well written. The author's ability to capture the ethos of the adolescent narrator is worth the read in and of itself.

I've been waiting years for this book and it was well worth it. While it a few pages for me to remember the details of the Old Kingdom, I really enjoyed learning more about the Abhorsens. It also explained much about what happened in the years before Sabriel. Clariel grew up as the daughter of a premier goldsmith. But her mother had little interest in her. Clariel had no goldsmithing talent but she loved animals and the land and wanted nothing more than to live in the forest. But when her mother is called to the city, Clariel must go as well. She discovers that when she gets angry, she becomes a berserk, a fighting talent to be reckoned with. She's learning Charter magic but she never really thought about it before. Then she crosses Free Magic and is seduced by a Free Magic being. Suddenly there is free magic overwhelming her Charter magic. Add Moggett to the mix and you have a super powerful free magic berserk running around who really only wants to be alone in the forest and if she has to go through an army to get there, she will. It was a fans imaging story on multiple levels and Clariel was a great character.

I picked this up after studying narcotics in Politics and thinking it might be a good read. I can't quite work out how I feel about this novel, it was no where near as controversial and shocking as I had percieved it to be, instead I found it confusing and a little bit of a jumble. It is, although, worth a look if you are interested in junkies and narcotics, as it gives an insight into the mind and life of a man with an addiction.

I liked it, and was inspired enough by it and admire the author's passion (also now love her blog), but was hoping to love it and have it change my life. I was hoping to get more from it than the advice that I could also have a creativity-minded family without all the expense- all I have to do is find some super cute cabinet for free on the side of the road, and then commit to filling it with plants so I can start naturally dying material to make our own clothes. No problem right? Anyway, I really related to her introduction and identified with the author right away, but found the rest of the book to be fall short for both inspiration and practicality. I did however come away more resolved to find my own ways to be encourage imagination and simplicity within my home.

The report assesses the current situation in Iraq (political, economic, civil infrastrucure, security) and then offers 79 recommendations, notably the need to engage with Syria and Iran, and the 'surge' tactic. Definately worth contrasting current efforts in Iraq with the report's recommendations (pubished in Dec 2006). Also interesting to note that 4 out of the 5 on the committee have a backround in Law.
