This book was fantastic. I find Sebastian Faulks language and imagery fascinating. This has something to do with the fact that I am also fascinated by war literature, but also has much to do with Sebastian Faulks love story. His description of love, love for ones country and the epic love story between Charlotte and Gregory is simply stunning. His description of the landscapes he sets his charcters in was also beautiful. Beauty is juxtaposed with harrowing images of the 2nd world war, and particularly the treatment of French Jews. This book made me think a lot about what it would have been like to live through the war in a time of such terror. An amazing book overall.

4.5. I really liked it and I would give it five stars if it weren't for the fact that sometimes I was a little dubious. Diana and Matthew are amazing protagonists. I was in love with them from the begining. All the creatures and their stories are pretty interesting. The book is fairly long but it will go by fast because of the constant action. If it drags for a little while it doesn't last too long and then it will capture you again. I love the inclusion of genetics and the supernatural. It is one of my favorite things in Fiction so in that sense the book kept me captive but somethings like time-travelling make me flinch. Overall, for fans of this kind of literature it is a must-read.

So far this book is pretty funny. I keep imagining him reading it the way he would on TAL. Which makes it all the more funny. The France stuff is absolutely hysterical. What I love the most about this book is that it's so easy to read quickly. Finished. It's not as funny as I expected. But now I'm reading the Corduroy book and it's pretty hilarious from the start. I love David Sedaris and his funny voice.

Memoirs aren't usually this riveting, but I stayed up until almost 1 AM finishing this one. Infidel was a fascinating account that brought to life one woman's experiences in countries that I only ever heard about on the news (especially back in the 1980s). Completely apart from the commentary on modern Islam, this was an eye-opening account of life in "Third World" countries. Your heart cries for the narrator, with her bullying elder brother, her unhappy and often cruel mother, her deadbeat father. Yet everyone is complex multifaceted: her brother stands up for her; her mother stands by her; her father sometimes does the right thing. Ali has no reservations about voicing her critiques about anything of which she disapproves, and while the reader is always aware that her bitter experiences color her views, Ali is also aware of this. It may be only one woman's view--as she yells out against the opposition of millions across the world--but when you are as influential as Ali is purported to be, it's a view of which we should all be aware.

The Millennium series focuses on journalists in the throes of their journalistic lives, writing and covering the daily lives around them. Journalists don't always have the luxury of paring down their prose in the way that fiction writers do. Whatever information they've uncovered today, be it the fact that Mr. X worked for Texaco in 1987 or Ms. Y has a penchant for blue suede shoes, it could all be relevant tomorrow. Therefore, it's all worth publishing. The difference, and why we don't notice it as much, is in the presentation: an average story covers 600 to 800 words, and if more information is uncovered, it comes out tomorrow, not as an addition to today's story. There's lots of information, but it's broken up into smaller chunks, and therefore the extra is more digestible. Larsson takes this concept of journalistic provision of information and writes in this style. In some cases (e.g., the first 100 pages of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), maybe it's hard to get through. But the bottom line is that Larsson did something quite clever with the concept of journalism, morphing it into this meta-style of journalistic fiction. It's the reader's job to uncover which bits of extraneous information are important, as if the reader is him/herself an investigator. In this case, if we can manage through the slow start of #1, I think these books are an excellent read. Taking into consideration what Larsson has done with this meta-style, perhaps we can gain a little more patience in enduring the exposition. Read more of my thoughts on my blog.
don't worry, it gets less strange as it goes on.

A hilarious book for those who enjoy dry humor. Filled with the wit and cultural idiosyncrasies that we see every day. If I can offer a suggestion. Pick up the Audiobook version. It is perfectly narrated by Bronson "Balki Bartokomous-from Perfect Strangers" Pinchot in a way that just brings the whole memoir to life.

This is a nice short story set after Ink Exchange. It shows a glimpse of Leslie's life after the events in Ink Exchange. I highly recommend this story to anyone reading the series.
