I haven't actually cried while reading in a very long time. This one clearly tugs at the heart and leaves you feeling torn. The ending was definitely not something I predicted at all! Very sad story.

Severian is a promising young apprentice torturer who betrays the guild by assisting in an act of mercy. Rather than being tortured and killed himself, however, he is given one of the finest executioner's blades (Terminus Est) and exiled. During his subsequent journeys, he meets many people with hidden agendas, and ultimately receives a startling revelation from the Autarch: Urth is dying and he must revive the sun. I first read The Book of the New Sun during summer vacation following my sophomore year of college. I could not close the book, and ended up reading the entire series in one sitting. My punishment was a severe headache. Gene Wolfe is an extraordinarily talented writer, with a gift for imagery and characterization, but his writings are extremely dense with symbolism and themes; consequently, they are meant to be savored rather than gorged. There are graveyard scenes, jungle scenes, cannibalistic scenes, urban scenes, traveling performance scenes, remnants-of-modern-Earth scenes...the list goes on. In addition, he is known for employing "unreliable narrators," which adds to the complexity given the first-person narration. Years later, I discovered that he is a practicing Catholic, and now I am wondering what additional layers of meaning I had missed, much like Lewis' Narnia.
