The book, Cat’s Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut explores the ignorance of mankind. This book is about how people don’t realize the affect that the actions they take now have on the future and how destructive they are. The main character is a writer named Jonah who is writing a book. Eventually, Jonah becomes president of a place called San Lorenzo and many unplanned events happen to him. The book follows the writer Jonah as he interviews many people along his journey to president. The conflict is between the power that humans have verses how unintelligent they are. The main family is the Hoenikker family and the mysterious weapon is called Ice-nine. Humans have created weapons that they think they use wisely but it doesn’t turn out that way. This book is very old but it still has many issues that we have today. For example, humans have many ways of destroying themselves and we are quickly destroying the planet, even though we know the dangers. At first the book was slightly confusing but as the plot became clearer, I found it very creative and interesting. The only time Vonnegut mentions the main character’s name is in the beginning of the story. For a while, I thought that the main character was Vonnegut but by the end I realized that that isn’t true. Everyone should read this book. There are many motifs in the book but the main one is Ice-nine, which is something that turns all liquids to solids even if you lick it you turn into a frozen statue. The hook is another symbol that pops out in the book. Whenever someone commits any crime the punishment for all of them is to be hung from a hook that goes through the person. The combination of these two symbols makes the world a very scary place and makes the reader feel how scared the people in this society must feel. This is a great book and everyone who can, should read it. It has the same messages then that are needed in the world today.
