The writing's excellent. Clear and concise, just how I like it. It was hard for me to personally relate to some of the characters, but that's not for lack of Beattie's trying. I can relate to folks who "summer" and have second apartments in the City about as well as I can relate the hard-drinking, hard-living folks in Raymond Carver's stories, which is to say not really all that much. Doesn't really stop either writers' stories from punching me in the gut, though. Some might call some of the references in Beattie's stories a bit dated. I find them nostalgic. She references Pac Man & Space Invaders (the arcade machines), Bowie playing on the radio, LBJ, and est. It's risky when a writer does that, but maybe I'm just (barely) old enough for those references to resonate with me.

I enjoyed this exploration of e even though the math rapidly required more skill and comprehension than I retain from 3rd semester calculus 44 years ago. Chapter 14 was almost beyond the pale. The history, biographies, and philosophy made it worth the upstream struggle.

One of the best science fiction books in my opinion, and definitely the best of the series. Really puts a good perspective on war and how one society tends to alienate another to fight them. Also a great commentary on how children and young adults come to realize how they are shaped and molded.

I LOVED this book. The party for Louise was wonderful. The interaction with Eve and the others was great and I loved when Roarke had to put his foot down about the party and Eve did not give him a lot of grief. This is one of the best in the series. This book really showcased Eve's caring side and it seems she is accepting the fact that others care about her and she cares about others. LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT.

3.5 stars. It was very slow going in the beginning. 1st books in a series often are a little slow in the beginning. But this one just didn't grab me. My friend who recommended this book series to me assured me that I would love it and to stick to it. It got a lot better and fast moving by the end. And I definitely want to read the next one. Rachel Morgan is a witch. No really. She basically gets the rough end of the stick every time and finds herself unhappy in her job, which she quits. She ends up unknowingly building a small family with a pixie and a vampire. Who knew? Jenks the pixie is awesome. I loooove his character and his snark.

I read this years ago and then just re-read it so I could remember what was happening before reading book 2. Here's my old review: Kind of left hanging. Cooler than I thought Swamp Thing could ever be. Fear monster wasn't that original but was creepy. I like Etrigan. I would add to that that one thing I noticed this time is that the Swamp Thing is mostly in the background instead of being a normal "superhero" punching bad guys in the face and I think that's a good thing. He always seems to be very calm and introspective and he's connected to nature. He's a very chill hero. The story seems to be happening around him and I love Alan Moore's dramatic, dark vocabulary so this works out great. Would probably give it 3.5 stars if I could.

An interesting reference book listing all the 'must reads'. I was interested to go through and see which ones I had already read and ones that I would like to read in the future. It has a good format with some good artwork and photography.
