** spoiler alert ** I had a hard time getting into this book, but it got easier towards the middle to end of the book. A young female doctor takes off to help children of an orphanage only to find out on her way that her grandfather has passed away. This book then goes back and forth between present day and her grandfather's past. She remembers her time with her grandfather when they visited the zoo together. She remembers the stories her grandfather told her when she was young. Mainly about the tiger's wife (a deaf, mute girl that is befriended by an escaped tiger from the 1941 war), and that of the deathless man. I found the stories about the deathless man most intriguing, especially about the time her grandfather first encountered him. The story about the tiger's wife is interesting in itself in that it leaves a lot unsaid about what happened in the end, and also all the theories from the villagers about her and the tiger. I definitely felt the book was a lot easier to read and stayed intrigued by during these past reflections of the grandfather's stories.

The pictures in this book!! They are fantastic. My favorite is when the hippo dreams she is a butterfly. But the gorillas dancing where the blue bananas grow is almost as good. The rhyme scheme works well and is pleasant to read to a soon-to-be-sleepy child. It's a lovely bedtime book, but really it is all about the pictures.

One of my favorite stories as a little girl was The Wild Swans, by Hans Christian Anderson. I had no idea when I picked up this book that it was based on that story. I really LOVED the character development in this book. It was a magical story.

I really enjoyed this book. It's been awhile since I've read an indepth fantasy?sci fi series and I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this one. The idea of a colony ship going of course and landing on an unknown planet isn't a new one(but maybe it was when it was written). I like the strugle between the colonist who wouldn't mind staying and the shipe crew who desperatly wants to leave. The added problems of the "ghost wind" bring an interesting element to the story.

Meer dan een jaar heb ik erover gedaan om dit boek gelezen te krijgen. Dat zegt op zich genoeg. Het is niet dat het boek slecht geschreven is, of dat het verschrikkelijk saai is. Het is niet dat ik me heb geërgerd, of dat ik het weg moest leggen van verveling. Het was gewoon.. bwah.. Het is een boek. Het las soms een beetje als een geschiedenisboek met feitjes en weetjes, soms las het een beetje als een reisboek met beschrijvingen van landschappen en kerken en kloosters en soms las het ook een beetje als een roman. Ik kan niet zeggen dat ik het echt niet graag gelezen heb, maar het was zeker ook niet het eerste boek waar ik naar teruggreep als ik iets wilde lezen. Ik heb het vooral uitgelezen omdat ik mezelf verplicht heb om het uit te lezen. En dat kan niet echt de bedoeling zijn. Toch?

Benzersiz ama okunabilir bir tarzda yazılmış kitapları seviyorum. Oda bir istisna değildir! POV, kaçırılan, tecavüze uğrayan ve çocukları istismara maruz bırakan kız çocuklarıyla ilgili haberlerde yer alan birkaç hikayeye benzer şekilde "esaret altında" doğan küçük bir çocuktan. Anne, oğluna yeteri kadar sahip olduğu ve istediği kadar olabildiğince "normal" olabilmesi için büyük acılar yaşadı. Hikaye bizi hem annenin hem de çocuğun duygusal bir yolculuğuna çıkarıyor. Biri özgürlük arayışı, diğeri tanıdık olana sığınmak. Sahip oldukları tek şey kendi dünyalarında birbiriniz olduğunda ne yaparsınız? Sahip oldukları tek şey birbiridir ama gerçek dünyada yeterince dışarıdadır. Harika bir okuma!
