Kuyruklu Bir Yıldız Altında İzdivaç - Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

I really wanted to love this book. A story about a fat nerd making his way through life is right up my alley, especially with all of the sci-fi and fantasy references thrown in for good measure. And throw in the linguistic aspects, and someone like me should be completely hooked! (FYI: For anyone whose Spanish or nerd-fu isn't up to snuff, or is listening to the audio book like I did where they speak Spanish way too quickly for you to parse it, this website is extremely helpful! And yet... for one, the book is somewhat misnamed. The book is supposed to be about "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao", at least if you believe the title. However, more than half the book is actually about the life of his mother, and his grandfather, and even his sister. And the choice of his sister's ex-boyfriend as narrator was certainly a strange one. Also Lola's chapters that were told in SECOND person?! Who does this. I really think this book would have been so much better if it had only been about Oscar -- maybe with a bit of explanation about the curse, but just "here's what happened" not half the book -- and told, say, from his sister's point of view (but in first person! not second!). I really liked Oscar. I did sort of think he was pretty awesome by the end of the book. Although he was incredibly frustrating to me because he flat out refused to do anything about his situation except whine about it (well, and try to off himself). People tried to help him, tried to teach him how to be more socially acceptable (and I do think it is possible to be socially acceptable and still a nerd) but he basically refused to take their advice except for a brief stint of running with Junior. It sort of bothers me when people are like this. I mean, sure, if the advice had been "throw away all your sci-fi and fantasy books, stop writing" then no way in hell -- that changes the very essence of who he is. But if the advice is "get a little more exercise, stop walking up to random girls and telling them you love them" ... Right. But it didn't stop me from loving Oscar anyway. And I also loved his sister, and yes, Junior... though I still think he was a strange choice for narrator. All the stuff about his mother and grandfather, though? I feel like that could have been an entirely other book! I mean... I guess it was a good story. And I ended up using Wikipedia to learn a lot more about the DR and all the events mentioned in this book. It was stuff I knew nothing about. But I just kept wanting to "get back to Oscar already!" and was annoyed by it. Anyway -- an interesting book. Won't become a favorite of mine or anything, but worth the read.
